I wonder if you can negotiate the salvage value down. That seems extremely high... Though much cheaper cars but both a GS and ES had salvage values of about $200 and $1000.

If you were in Omaha, I know a guy that does this for a living and just marks up 10% from his cost. We've bought two salvage cars from him and 10+ year ownership no issues.

If I put the repair documentation in the car for the two replacement front cats, Y-pipe, new battery and replacement trunk shocks, Copart will just chuck it out. So I will list the VIN here (and cut and paste it a few times) on the off chance a subsequent owner buys it in a salvage auction and runs a VIN search on Google. I'd be happy to forward copies of the receipts for the work done. Hopefully somebody picks this wonderful car up at a good price and gets it back on the road.VIN JTHBN36F765029688 2006 Lexus LS430

Good luck with your insurance company .... they enjoyed collecting your yearly premiums, but watch them do their best to pay you as little as possible!
Many of us are in this club. Add up the premiums say over 25 years--probably $30k. I had one accident thank goodness with a loaner car and not my own, the damage was around $3k, the car was brand new (I did feel bad because as you know I curb rental cars when parking), maybe at the time $55k list, and the lizard co. spec'd out used and aftermarket parts. The dealer had the right to sue me but luckily they did not. Used parts on a new car? This was 2010. So say they paid out $2500, and collected premiums for 25 years, I'd say that's quite the enjoyable ride for them.

To me it's quite odd that pharmacy benefits have not caught up. Last year thanks to my wife they paid $9k and we paid $300? This year because she stopped using that medication they paid $4k and we paid $180? This never happens with insurance. I think in reality my employer paid all that money.

There are so many scams (auto insurance being one). I finally received notice that I will be getting my settlement from the Takata air bag scandal. It is living proof that it pays for the mfgs to deny vehemently that they did anything wrong. This took 3 years to get the payola (I'm just a member of the class, not the lead or anything).

This year Jake sent me an unsolicited quote that was over $800 less annually than the hands people, and it was my privilege to switch! lol

I know two people who experienced hit/run but the actors could not get away due to heavy metro traffic and police on the scene. What absolutely floored me was that in case 1--no report taken by police, officer refused case 2--report taken, driver was unlicensed and uninsured, and allowed to drive away. how the **** does that happen? My buddy was livid. He was as surprised as I was. An actor is not a licensed driver, and they're allowed to drive away? I get that I am naive, but I woulda thought at minimum vehicle impounded and driver under arrest.

We have a couple of choices. Don't drive. Or, be careful. No accident is going to work out in our favor. Just like you don't get a triple bypass and expect to not have brain damage.

Thinking back to long long ago. Coworker rear ended someone at lunch, so exchanged info and he sent them a check for a thousand. 2 years later he was sued for a couple million. Again, we live in a society so we either close the blinds and be shut-ins, or we have to be careful.

Well said Johnhav430. Doing the "right thing" these days does not guarantee that an individual will get justice or what he/she is entitled to. It's disheartening but it's the real world.

You would actually be suing the people carrying the insurance for the difference. I'm not sure what the limitations on time is for that. I would've recommended not accepting the insurance offer initially until you came to agreement. Had them try to give me $500 for 1990 740 Volvo with 300k miles, ended up getting $2.2k - just using comparables in comparable condition and what's available on the market, not theory.

Our insurance paid $11,500 for the car, but we don't get $1,000 of that because we have a $1,000 collision deductible.

$11,500. So much for the "these cars are virtually worthless now no matter condition or mileage" trolls.

Just to illustrate some more on insurance. An agent keeps soliciting me, and I don't respond. I want to say I am already a Jake customer, do you have some sort of incentive to have me switch agents? I would have thought it's unethical to solicit current policy holders and take them away from another agent. But it's insurance. Can this new agent get me a better rate? Should I try?

I will say this. Not only did Jake save me almost $900/yr., but I can pay monthly, using a credit card, and it's simply dividing the amount by 12. No fees whatsoever. The hands people made me pay 1 year, and 6 mos., in advance, to avoid higher charges. No CC on auto, checking only as well. All that for $900/yr. more! Would have been like $1050 if I didn't pay in advance!

Wow! That’s amazing. Makes me rethink dropping collision. $11,500 for a 2006LS. Would $6,000 sound reasonable for a 2001LS total loss settlement or am I being too optimistic?
