if the car is unlocked in a climate control garage the battery will last longer then if parked outside in the heat/cold with alarm activated

I would respectfully disagree with the garage/alarm statement. 1, how many of us have a climate controlled garage 2, my garage queen that sat 6+ mos. at a time, has a comfort access system where when the door handles are touched, the car "courtesy" lights turn on outside and inside, to include two front bulbs which are H8s, rear tails which are leds, leds in the door handles, the interior lights, and the fuel pump pre-primes. I went in and out of the car several times over the 6 mos stretches activating all of the above and consuming battery power.

If a car needs to be left unlocked in order to save the battery, there must be a parasitic drain somewhere. my .02 is the condition of the battery itself is a major factor. Not testing it is like saying I feel like I might have the flu, what do you think? But I don't want you to take my temperature. With that condition in place, we'll simply be guessing.
