Cabin Air Filter for Lexus LS430
#16
Honestly doubt it matters what you spend because that’s a ridiculous amount of time in between changing cabin filters anyway. They take less than 5 minutes to change and ur paying to breathe cleaner air... at this point you probably wouldn’t notice the difference without even having a filter.

I used a nice aftermarket one back when I first got my LS and it held up pretty well. I currently use the more expensive OEM one because my parts guy hooked me up.
According to one of our parts department managers, the more expensive OEM one is the best but the regular one is fine for most people. The price difference is big at retail if I’m not mistaken.

There's a lot of good quality filters on Amazon and Rock Auto that fit it just like OEM. I change mine around once a year, I wouldn't sped the extra money on an OEM one. Just make sure you get the carbon ones. Another thing to check when you change the filters is to make sure the intake vents on the outside of the vehicle are free of debris and dirt.

With German cars, there are often parts that cost $14, that are IDENTICAL to the one costing $33, where the former is the same part without the mfg. brand and packaging. I find this is never the case with Japanese. The lower price on Japanese, is in fact aftermarket. But sometimes aftermarket is more than good enough...get the $8 filters, and get 4 of them. You've now saved minimum of $56 and set for 4 years. my .02
This is what I use from Rock Auto @ ~ $8

p.s. maybe I'm wrong, this website claims the $8 filter is in fact OE identical. My point was with Germans it's 100% transparent, here we're taking one source's word. This is what I use from Rock Auto @ ~ $8

Images of original vs superceding cabin filter
McGrath Lexus parts department provided images of original vs lower cost alternative Cabin Filter.
In comparison, the original filter provides almost twice the number of filtering pleats, or surface area. This equates to longer service intervals.
In operation, decreased back pressure and noise in system.
Original filter P.N. 87139-50030..notice positive foam sealing strips
Lower cost alternative 87139-YZZ01 lacks positive sealing strips

For reference, here's the Denso First Time Fit 453-1007. It appears to be charcoal treated like the Lexus filters, and seems to be similar to the 87139-YZZ01 in terms of construction and pleats (total surface area). I will probably get the 87139-50030 filters going forward when I run out of my current supply of 453-1007 and 87139-YZZ01. Generally, higher pleats and surface area should equate to higher backpressure and higher noise, but I value the more effective dust/pollen filtering abilities over noise anyway.

Thus far none of their OEM supplier inference equates to equal quality to dealer parts.
Sad.

Slightly related to the topic of Toyota/Lexus filters vs Denso First Time Fit, I have both the Lexus Engine AIr Filter 17801-50030 and the Denso FTF 143-2085. They are visually exactly identical. Same plastic framing, same code on the framing, material is visually identical, same number and depth of pleats, same thickness of material, same wrinkles at the end pleats, same amount of light transmission.
The only difference is the printing on the side of the end pleats :
End pleat printing
17801-50030 vs 143-2085 top-down compare

I change mine out twice per year, 1 time coming up on June 1st, after 'pollen season' here in the NW. I buy from either oemvehicleparts.com or mylparts.com. $20. As for the part numbers...do we have a choice? I think if Toyota decides to replace the part #, we just have to accept, right?
As on all parts, "OEM" does not mean "Original Part".
@StanVanDam , thanks for that information and pics!

Does anyone have the link for the DENSO air filter?
I found one on rockauto but on the amz reviews for that filter some say it doesn't fit ls430.
Just bought a 2002 430 and Im noticing a smell.
