I had a pro do it where he used a paint-like product (kind of like a powder coating) in flat black. Applied it right on the badges and did not require removal and reinstall.
The only down side is I fear that car wash brushes may damage the finish so now I only hand wash. (He said it would stand up but since he is not local I am not risking it...).
