Yes lots of rattles since the entire parcel tray is going to be shaking with the sub. From the front seat you don't hear them much but they're extremely evident in the back when your head is right next to them
Just some progress pics.
Here is the top of the box test fitted with the foam to seal it from the trunk. It is bolted to the rear tray at five points. The foam will compress more, this was just a mock-up and not tightened. Ls430 sub box build
Top view of the box, the foam is some stuff I got off Amazon. Open cell foam tape or something like that. Compresses and forms to shapes real nice. Ls430 sub box build
The box itself, I then just glued the very top baffle face to it and bolted them together to cure (not shown). Ls430 sub box build
Spacers I’m using for the gap between the shelf and top of the box. This will create very sturdy mounts and will not allow the shelf to flex at all. They will be double stacked when i mount it. Again, this is all mock-up. I sanded the corners since the port air will be flowing in this area as well. Need that smooth flow.
Just a pic of the sound deadener I used. I was going to do the bottom but decided it was unnecessary. Let’s hope I’m right. Ls430 sound deadening
Thats all for now. I’m going to test the sub in the box tomorrow possibly. Then carpet, then final assembly. I’ll leave the rear seat and tray cover out a few days to kill any rattle points before the interior goes together. More pics to come…
What a PITA, but I’m done! Still breaking in the sub (see fuzzy pic below) but so far I think it was worth the effort.
Crappy carpet job. As soon as I finished I realized a cleaner way to do it, thus is my life.
Minimal trunk panel hacking. You don’t notice unless you’re looking for it.
Still have substantial trunk space and access to the spare.
Nice job! Looks great. How does sound compare to when the sub was sealed off in the trunk?
Thanks! It’s hard to give a detailed comparison right now since I still need to fine tune it, my spacers are a tad too big so the seal is tighter on one side than the other and I still need to adjust the amp gain for the new setup. I can already tell that it sounds fuller, the higher end of the sub range is coming through a lot better and the speaker isn’t as stressed to play the lows at high volume. Now instead of getting that sweet sweet bass in only certain songs I can enjoy a wider variety of music which is important to me. Was it worth it? I’ll get back to you after the sub is broken in and all adjustments are completed.
Ok i got home after working all night and I just couldn’t leave it alone. Sanded down the spacers for a perfectly level fit, the seal is compressed equally all around, and I played with the gain and EQ a little.
Was the extra work worth it? YES!!! All the sound goes straight to the cabin so nothing is lost. Full sound all around. For some reason (vibration?) I still have a sight trunk rattle but nothing compared to how it was with the traditional setup. I am very happy that I decided to go that extra mile.
Ok, I think I am done now! This thread can now go to sleep, which is exactly where I’m headed.
