Need some clarification on Toyota power steering, transmission and brake fluid
I am having a hard time understanding Toyota power steering fluid and transmission fluid.
I don't see any Toyota power steering fluid. What I ususally read is use Toyota ATF for your power steering. Is it really true? My power steering fluid is not red. What should I use?
Same go to brake fluid. If the brake master cap calls out for dot3. I assume I can use any dot3 fluid from the store. Just like oil, as long as they meet the standard, consumer can use any as long as they use the proper grade like 5W30 or whatever. Correct?

Just put a quality dexron ATF into it. Valvoline Maxlife ATF works very well in Toyota power steering systems, and is available pretty much anywhere that sells automotive fluids.
With the vehicles I own, the only one that requires some actual OEM fluid (or at least claims it needs it) is my 08 Honda Ridgeline. Even my Nissans which state to use Nissan ATF also say it is fine to use Dexron ATF instead.

I think the issue is to change the power steering fluid once in awhile. I don't think the ATF needs to be synthetic, all though that is what i use.
Clean fluid will give the pump a longer life. Save money.
One thing you might consider is if it is dark brown and you change it with a red colored ATF. If it is still dark, then change it again. After that if it pretty much stays red, you are good to go.
