I did tear apart the old speaker to see what happened. The magnets had somehow gotten misaligned and were rubbing on the voice coil. I have not gotten them out yet to see if they were supposed to have been glued in place yet or not.

Interesting that the Crutchfield table lists the same speaker for all 2007-2017 LS models. I had a 2007 ML and now have a 2014 ML and they couldn't sound more different! I guess it's something to do with the amp settings (presumably to stop gang bangers from blowing the speakers).

With crutchfield fitment guide, I'm thinking it's about physical dimensions more than electronic compatibility. No rules that prevent a vendor from saying whatever they wish, even when it's vague and conflicts with specs on the individual speaker page. But, if it fits and you're happy with the sound, it's all good.
