Default 2008 Lexus LS460 P0012 but no symptoms??

I got a 2008 LS460 with 150k miles and I'm getting the CEL for P0012 for "Camshaft Position A - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)".
I changed the VVT solenoid, fresh oil change (with a engine flush) on the driver side since it was on Bank 1 and cleared the code. Couple of months later, CEL came back on...Car runs great, no clicking, ticking, rattle noises coming from the engine.

I was told it could also be the crank shaft position sensor and I am trying to look at everything before I decide it might be the timing chain...I paid $7k for this car and I'm not sure it would be worth spending 2-3k more to fix. I will probably sell it as-is if it does turn out to be the timing chain...

Any other ideas you guys have I can research>

Do a search. If memory serves me this code can be caused by a weak or recently disconnected battery. Yes, timing chain or worn guides can cure this. 150k is low miles for this car, depending on how it was maintained, it may have lots of life in it. There are FAQ at top of the forum that point out several known wear/maintenance issues. If they've already been addressed...

Now that you bring up the battery, I did notice the positive wire connector looks real corroded and the CEL does go away along with the VSC light. Battery did pass voltage test and alternator is new.

thanks, I’ve been posting about this car on here but I’m still new to this forum

I recently had code P0020 which ended up being the VVT timing motor on the right bank. Car threw a CEL and VSC light but ran perfectly. I seem to remember your code P0012 is the same code left bank? Replaced the part myself, an easy job, with a used guaranteed eBay part, for little money.

Good luck!

The LS460 is computer centric and is very sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Poor connections and/or weak battery can cause all sorts of seemingly unrelated issues. Get those connections cleaned up, even if it does fix the current issue, it should be done. Voltage on battery terminals (not clamps) while engine is running should be at least 13.5 volts.
