Aftermarket amp

If you change the oem amp I'm pretty sure you'll lose functions on the head unit. You're better off to get a 7 channel LOC and run it in conjunction with an aftermarket amp.
But, if you're going to go through all that the cheap speakers in both the premium and the ML sound systems should be changed also unless you like listening to opera or violin music.

Unless you're going to change out all the speaker, too, I'd forget it. The amp and speakers are equalized to the car's interior acoustics as a multi channel system, and won't work well with non-OEM parts.

The amplifiers also have the sound processer built in, all of the crossovers, time alignment, most everything, is done in the amplifier on these cars- Mark Levinson or not.
