$450 for a transmission service is way too high, right?

Now days you have to factor in the DEI hires. If you can't spell car should you really be working on them?

Well, I managed to pick the car up last night and drive home with zero issues. It drove perfectly. It felt great. I heard no odd noises and the transmission seemed to shift excellent. I drove the same curvy and hilly route.

The service advisor I talked to said they literally cannot figure out what happened. They told me the fluid level was correct. However, out of an abundance of caution they did another drain and fill. They couldn't find any debris in the fluid. They said they couldn't find any codes either. They drove the car around 20 mi and were unable to reproduce the issue.

I'm suspicious but least they didn't charge me anything for yesterday.

Toyota is doing that now? Oh my.

The tech who did my car was foreign. Xion or something was their name. Not that that is an issue but just an FYI.

I have absolutely zero problem with immigrants or other ethnicities. I'm married to a Philapina immigrant.. or rather she is about to be one (waiting on her Visa). But I definitely have a problem with hiring people to meet a diversity quota. I'm about skills and qualifications, not diversity tick boxes.

I'm about an hour and 40 minutes northwest of Madison in Wisconsin.

Glad this has a happy ending so far. So you are NW of Baraboo the water park capital of America?

Hmmmmmm. Interesting. All was well so they did the job again.....very interesting, and now it's working lol! My guess is that they screwed up the first time and fluid got aerated or was low and you lost gears.

What if. What if. They put wrong fluid in. No, that's too much, and also what it could be to have such an effect? Forgot to fill? Fill by fluid removed??? Puzzling me for days tbh. Like, I need to prevent that happening at all costs.
Yea, striker, but too far fetched re aeration and like how low you have to underfill to lose all gears including the default ones?? Like TC drained??? 0 pressure on mains?

About 2 quarts low will do it actually, had a car from an other shop filled when hot and not at spec that did this

Well, I am about an hour away from Baraboo but you're thinking of Lake Delton, which I am also about an hour from. Baraboo and Lake Delton are really just a stone throw away form each other.

Personally, I'm not much of a water park person. Go carts are more up my alley and there are several different options in Lake Delton .

I never heard of transmission fluid aeration before. Is that something that would take some time to develop due to low or too much fluid? Perhaps that would be why it took 35 miles before I noticed anything.

Hmmm. Wouldn't that have just outright destroyed the transmission or at least caused permanent damage that should still be noticeable?

I agree not a water park guy either. Spent 10 months in Baraboo running the logistics for a surveillance upgrade at the casino back in 2010..

On an overfill yes, it takes a second to form.

Hope you tried the buffet there. I used to go all the time befor it shutdown during COVID. Unfortunately, they only opened back up briefly after the smoke settled and now it is no more. I miss their stuffed clams.

@Striker223 Well then, I'm thinking that is indeed what happened and not an underfill.

The Care Care Nut said a drain and fill should replace about 3-4 quarts if you aren't repeating the process. My invoice says they put in five...

My second invoice says they did a second drain and fill but they neglected to note how many quarts they put in. Maybe because they put in too much the first time and was worried I would notice the discrepancy if they listed fewer quarts this time.

That is correct, 5 is a mild overfill and likely what happened to you. You will likely be okay going forward as the AA80 is a strong trans

Sometimes, sh_t just happens. It shouldn't, and there's no explanation here, but hopefully this will be the end of it.
