Default Tpms

In the center of the instrument cluster is a small screen – this can display a bunch of info, including the tire pressures and locations. For me, they are all blank. Only little bit of info I found is to ensure that I have OEM sensors, but not much past that.
Ref: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...play-help.html

Any options for how to determine, without pulling the tires off the car, what’s going on? I have TechStream and can read/write IDs as needed and I have a SnapOn TMPS3 unit (and an Autel, among other things) – I can live read the sensor (including codes, etc) and I can verify programming in the car / reprogram as needed. Each sensor reads correctly with the Autel and gives accurate information, and the codes match what's in the computer.

I'll attach this screenshot from TechStream in case it helps.

Assuming you have registered the IDs, have you used the reset button up by the gas pedal. Method and location you will find it in the owners manual, but a bright flashlight helps locate it as on the LS, it is further back towards the firewall than it would appear from the picture in the owners manual. Starts on page 461 in mine.

462 6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure warning system that uses tire
pressure warning valves and transmitters to detect low tire inflation pressure
before serious problems arise.
● If the tire pressure drops below a predetermined level, the driver is
warned by a screen display and a warning light. (→P. 504, 510)
◆ Installing tire pressure warning valves and transmitters
When replacing tires or wheels, tire pressure warning valves and transmitters
must also be installed.
When new tire pressure warning valves and transmitters are installed,
new ID codes must be registered in the tire pressure warning computer
and the tire pressure warning system must be initialized. Have tire pressure
warning valve and transmitter ID codes registered by your Lexus
dealer. (→P. 464)
◆ Initializing the tire pressure warning system
■ The tire pressure warning system must be initialized in the following
circumstances:
● When rotating the tires.
● When the tire inflation pressure is changed such as when changing
traveling speed.
When the tire pressure warning system is initialized, the current tire
inflation pressure is set as the benchmark pressure.
Tire pressure warning system
● The tire pressure detected by the tire pressure
warning system can be displayed on the multiinformation
display. (→P. 96)
6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance 463

Maintenance and care
■ How to initialize the tire pressure warning system
Park the vehicle in a safe place and turn the engine switch off.
Initialization cannot be performed while the vehicle is moving.
Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the specified cold tire inflation
pressure level. (→P. 549)
Make sure to adjust the tire pressure to the specified cold tire inflation pressure
level. The tire pressure warning system will operate based on this pressure
level.
Turn the engine switch to IGNITION ON mode.
Press and hold the tire pressure
warning reset switch until
the tire pressure warning light
blinks slowly 3 times.
Wait for a few minutes with the engine switch in IGNITION ON
mode and then turn the engine switch off.

464 6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
◆ Registering ID codes
The tire pressure warning valve and transmitter is equipped with a
unique ID code. When replacing a tire pressure warning valve and
transmitter, it is necessary to register the ID code. Have the ID code
registered by your Lexus dealer.
■When to replace your vehicle’s tires
Tires should be replaced if:
●You have tire damage such as cuts, splits, cracks deep enough to expose the fabric,
and bulges indicating internal damage
●A tire goes flat repeatedly or cannot be properly repaired due to the size or location
of a cut or other damage
If you are not sure, consult with your Lexus dealer.
■Replacing tires and wheels
If the ID code of the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter is not registered, the
tire pressure warning system will not work properly. After driving for about 20 minutes,
the tire pressure warning light blinks for 1 minute and stays on to indicate a system
malfunction.
■Tire life
Any tire over 6 years old must be checked by a qualified technician even if it has seldom
or never been used or damage is not obvious.
■Routine tire inflation pressure checks
The tire pressure warning system does not replace routine tire inflation pressure
checks. Make sure to check tire inflation pressure as part of your routine of daily
vehicle checks.
■When rotating the tires
Make sure that the engine switch is off. If the tires are rotated while the engine switch
is in IGNITION ON mode, the tire position information will not be updated.
If this accidentally occurs, either turn the engine switch to off and then to IGNITION
ON mode, or initialize the system after checking that the tire pressure is properly
adjusted.
6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance 465
6
Maintenance and care
■Maximum load of tire
Check that the maximum load of the replacement tire is greater than 1/2 of the
Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR) of either the front axle or the rear axle, whichever
is greater.
■Tire types
●Summer tires
Summer tires are high-speed performance tires best suited to highway driving
under dry conditions. Since summer tires do not have the same traction performance
as snow tires, summer tires are inadequate for driving on snow-covered or
icy roads. For driving on snow-covered roads or icy roads, the use of snow tires is
recommended. When installing snow tires, be sure to replace all four tires.
●All season tires
All season tires are designed to provide better traction in snow and to be adequate
for driving in most winter conditions as well as for use year-round. All season
tires, however, do not have adequate traction performance compared with snow
tires in heavy or loose snow. Also, all season tires fall short in acceleration and handling
performance compared with summer tires in highway driving.
●Snow tires
For driving on snow-covered roads or icy roads, we recommend using snow tires.
If you need snow tires, select tires of the same size, construction and load capacity
as the originally installed tires. Since your vehicle has radial tires as original equipment,
make sure your snow tires also have radial construction. Do not install studded
tires without first checking local regulations for possible restrictions. Snow
tires should be installed on all wheels. (→P. 321)
For the GAWR, see the Certification Label.
For the maximum load of the tire, see the load
limit at maximum cold tire inflation pressure
mentioned on the sidewall of the tire.
(→P. 555)
466 6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance
■If the tread on snow tires wears down below 0.16 in. (4 mm)
The effectiveness of the tires as snow tires is lost.
■Situations in which the tire pressure warning system may not operate properly
●In the following cases, the tire pressure warning system may not operate properly.
• If non-genuine Lexus wheels are used.
• A tire has been replaced with a tire that is not an OE (Original Equipment) tire.
• A tire has been replaced with a tire that is not of the specified size.
• Tire chains etc. are equipped.
• Lock nuts are equipped.
• An auxiliary-supported run-flat tire is equipped.
• If a window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.
• If there is a lot of snow or ice on the vehicle, particularly around the wheels or
wheel housings.
• If the tire inflation pressure is extremely higher than the specified level.
• If the spare tire is in a location subject to poor radio wave signal reception.
• If a large metallic object which can interfere with signal reception is put in the
trunk.
• If tires not equipped with tire pressure warning valves and transmitters are used.
• If the ID code on the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters is not registered
in the tire pressure warning computer.
●Performance may be affected in the following situations.
• Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large display,
airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electrical noise
• When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other wireless
communication device
If tire position information is not correctly displayed due to the radio wave conditions,
the display may be corrected by driving and changing the radio wave conditions.
●When the vehicle is parked, the time taken for the warning to start or go off could
be extended.
●When tire inflation pressure declines rapidly for example when a tire has burst, the
warning may not function.
6-3. Do-it-yourself maintenance 467
6
Maintenance and care
■The initialization operation
●Make sure to carry out initialization after adjusting the tire inflation pressure.
Also, make sure the tires are cold before carrying out initialization or tire inflation
pressure adjustment.
●If you have accidentally turned the engine switch off during initialization, it is not
necessary to press the reset switch again as initialization will restart automatically
when the engine switch has been turned to IGNITION ON mode for the next time.
●If you accidentally press the reset switch when initialization is not necessary, adjust
the tire inflation pressure to the specified level when the tires are cold, and conduct
initialization again.
■When initialization of the tire pressure warning system has failed
Initialization can be completed in a few minutes. However, in the following cases, the
settings have not been recorded and the system will not operate properly. If
repeated attempts to record tire inflation pressure settings are unsuccessful, have
the vehicle inspected by your Lexus dealer.
●When operating the tire pressure warning reset switch, the tire pressure warning
light does not blink 3 times.
●After carrying out the initialization procedure, the tire pressure warning light blinks
for 1 minute then stays on after driving for 20 minutes.

I will follow the procedure. Of note, if I dump the pressure of any tire to 10, the TPMS light and master warning light in the dash illuminate, and they clear up when all tires are at correct pressures. It just doesn't show the tires and their pressures in the small screen in the dash.

Does the picture of the car show up with 5 lines. One beside each tire and one at the back for the spare. If it does it means you have one TPMS with a low battery and it isn't strong enough to transmit the pressure. If one or two don't transmit then often none will show up. One of the signs you have one or more batteries getting weak is it takes longer for pressures to display. With new batteries the pressures show up immediately, the weaker one or more gets the longer it takes to populate. My 2015 has started to do that because the tpms in the spare is getting weak. Will replace all 5 soon. When one or more of the batteries go flat, the display stays blank.

Correct, 5 dashed lines.

All 5 tires report Batt ok on the TPMS3

Do I really have to buy 5 new TPMS or is there a way to detect which battery is low?

Some scanners show the actual voltage of each battery. Yours shows battery ok but I have no idea what voltage triggers yours to say not ok. Issue is batteries last 7 to 10 years. When one goes, the rest won't be far behind so changing them all out when you change to new tires is just a whole bunch easier than doing one at a time. The display isnt mission critical. It can be left not displaying till you need new tires.

Fair enough. I'll see if I can get more info from any of my tools to see if I spot the low voltage ones.

The TechStream display shows all 5 tire pressures however, the TPMS module won't send the data to the gauge cluster display until the tire pressure sensor positions are located. This has been a problem with aftermarket sensors, the driver's display will not work.

Most O.E. sensors have an alphabet letter in the ID registration code, three of your sensors have all numerical ID codes. I suspect these are aftermarket replacements.

Is there a procedure for doing this? How do I "locate" it for the car? I know which sensor is where, but I don't know how to tell the car that.

So that's interesting. I doubt the spare tire one was ever replaced (since the rubber on that appears to be an original Michelin) and it's all numbers. That being said, I could replace the other 3 - tire ID 2 is a new Denso sensor I just put in because the old one appeared to be dead/broken.

Any way to know, without pulling the tires off the car, for sure if a sensor is O.E. or not?

The tire location can be manually entered into the module for some of the newer vehicles but for your car it occurs automatically each time you start the engine.

The only way I have been able to identify the brand of sensor has been to break the tire bead and inspect the sensor, a tire machine is needed for that. Perhaps someone can identify the sensor type based on the information on the screen.

I have replaced sensors in original spare tires, can't assume it is original. For the others, clean, shiny valve stems can be an indication those have been replaced.

Maybe I missed it but year is extremely important. Did the system work before? Where sensors changed recently? On my GS it almost always shows dashes until I start driving.
