WHY toyota...WHY?

READ HERE and understand the design concept before you try to knock it.
The look of Lexus is VERY intentional. That is what they are going for.
Knocking that is like knocking the Benz headkight look or the BMW grille-headlight scheme or the Volvo grille pattern.
They're trying to create a look that IS Lexus. Something people will recognise. It's not all the result of lazy designers.
The same way that we all know the Mercedes-look or the BMW-look. Think of it as the Toyota-Lexus-look.
Remember when the 1990 LS was released? Everyone complained that it "looked" like the Mercedes 560 SEL.
I guess they decided that they want that look comaprisons to stop.

That's great and all...but i'm not knocking the shape.
I think its quite nice actually.
point is...When i pay $70k for a car, i dont want it to be
ALMOST identical in shape and design
to a $25k economy sedan.
Especially from a distance.
Even Helen Keller could call this one...

I see the resemblance, but in no way is a camry remotely close to the new LS. It actually reminds me more of a spacious IS. In either case, we can all see what direction the designs are going. Too bad I don't have $60-70k to drop on a vehicle, let alone $40k.

I somewhat agree. They veered a little too close to the LS design. However, if you put the cars next to each other I have a feeling the differences will outweigh the similarities enough to end any confusion. This is not to say that people would mix the two up, which is rediculous, but that their design isn't quite so similar. The pure scale of the LS against the camry should make them look totally unique on the street. This is what I hope anyhow, as the camry has got larger and larger.

Woah I did not even realize that. I really like the new LS alot but I didnt know that it shares that many lines with the Camry. In some rear angles at a distance, you probably cannot distinguish the two. The only thing that sets them apart is the attention to details such as the nice chrome trim and wheels.

They are similar but not that close. It's all in the details. Toyota will probably sell a bunch of Camry cars. Good for them. If I was in a place in my life where I can drop the $ to get the new LS, I really could care less if the Camry kind of resembles it. I'd still be driving an LS.

I think one thing that we'd all agree on; Toyota's design teams are kickin out some great looking and distinctive looking cars. Definitely making a move in the looks area.
It's about time too...they're known for their reliability so the next logical step is to become known for a particular image. Great work in my opinion; all the new designs.

There are similar lines, but there's still no way anyone with a good pair of eyes cannot distinguish the two, even from a distance. Maybe possible for non-car enthusiasts, but who really cares, they usually can't tell MANY cars apart anyway, & they can't really see who is driving it from a distance, if that's what you're concerned about.
There's some family resemblance, so what ? Especially for that "emblem nose" on the grille of the Camry, I don't think you can easily miss it even from afar, maybe that's why they make it look that way . . .
