Thumbs up LS 460 demonstration at preview party!

Thanks to Lexus of Glendale, the party was great btw...

Anyhow, I just got back from the launch party for the LS 460 at Lexus of Glendale. It was great, large attendance, like the GS party last time (even though this time there are a number of events for the LS around SoCal and elsewhere, competing for attention, tonight it seemed just as crowded if not more). The food was great, even better than last time I think. There was an open bar, champagne, and hors d'oeuvres. I had shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon, crab cakes, curry pastry, and of course all combinations of cracker-laden treats. Desserts included fruit, chocolates, dates, etc. Although I didn't get to finish my plate (awww) --see below!

The shrimp cocktail station, which also featured smoked salmon and vegetable dips, was underneath a 'Lexus of Glendale' fixture which looked like an ice sculpture but was probably glass. It is partially obscured, but in the center of this pic (better pictures by others at another thread, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...php?t=244119):

But of course it was all about the cars. There were 2 LS 460s on the showroom floor (and incidentally at least 2 large Penske big rig vehicles parked outside--I guess they brought the cars in?). One was a Starfire Pearl LS 460, and the other was an LS 460 L in what I believe was Mercury Metallic. My first impression was that both cars looked very similar (a contrast to the LWB/SWB Benz/BMWs which have been very easy for me to tell apart), and better in person although the pictures came close. Not as polarizing as the GS for sure, and more stately than the IS as should be. I like the exhausts, the way the taillights wrap around the corners, the wheels, everything. The car definitely seems lower to the ground, hugging it almost (the 460 L in particular).

It was hard to get good pictures as there were lots of people crowding around, but here is a shot I got of the LS 460 later on, when the crowd seemed to have moved more towards the LS 460 L (the whole time, the 460 L had more traffic, although it was also hard to get a seat in the 460).

Sitting inside the 460 rear seat, my impression was that it was comparable to the lovely LS 430 backseat, although headroom is noticeably less in the center seat position (the center of the bench seems to be a bit higher than on the 430, reminding me of the 2ES). The rear seat recline on the LS 460 was nice and I did not feel cramped at all. Legroom was more than adequate and I am of medium height. The rear seat controls were very easy to use, just as before. The ceiling handles have chrome strips on them, which is an interesting touch. The 460 had the B-pillar AC vents, which are new for the LS, but the vents by the ceiling handles were only on the 460 L.

The rear trunk space seemed ok (the power trunk closer is great), like the 430 although the wheel wells seemed to intrude a bit. Overall, there is significant room for a number of suitcases. The 460 L with the 4-zone climate control does lose some room, but it's nowhere near the hybrid truncation and you definitely can fit in at least 2 large golf bags, and more items. Some good pics, courtesy of h20_247 and familycar, at: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=243948

I moved on to sit inside the rear seat of the LS 460 L, and wow it was great. Brought back memories of the first S-class I sat in years ago, as a kid (sitting on the floor of the rear compartment, using that area as a play space ). The 460 backseat is like the 430, comfortable and large...say 'business class.' The 460 L backseat is absolutely sumptuous...say 'first class.' It was great, comfortable and ensconced in total privacy via the power sunshades. The fold-down armrest had the power seat controls, radio controls, heated seat controls, etc--lots of features which seemed complex in the photos but were very simple in person. The heated seat ***** are much larger in the 4LS...the **** around the size of a penny or larger it seemed, bigger than the forward ***** on the 430.

I did notice that on the 460, the storage slots are smaller vs. the 430. The side pockets in front and back are the same format (folding in the front, fixed in the back), but there are smaller space-wise than before. The seatback pockets seem similar. The door ashtrays in the rear are also smaller than on the 430 (but who needs big ashtrays anyways). It also seemed like the wood covering the center A/C vents is optional on the 460 (a plastic covering was there on the 460, although the wood and armrest had wood). I forgot to check if there are the hidden storage drawers in the front...and the rear seat vanity mirrors look virtually the same as the 430's, which are great already.

I finally got someone to give up the front seat and I sat inside...my first reaction was that it was great. In person, the wood and the design looks beautifully engaging yet simple and intuitive--there are more subtle fine lines/creases across the dash which add a unique sense of design to the forward cabin. The center console seemed very fluid and well put-together, and again was more simple in person than it seemed in the photos. Most of the buttons are in the same place as on the 430. The TFT display in the dash is great! Love the animations of the car, looks very high-tech. The glove box interestingly closes without a 'click' - it seemed like it was magnetic although I think a latch was involved--just push it until it touches, and it's closed without a sound or differential movement.

OF COURSE I wanted to see the features et al in action , but although the cars were hooked up to external power supply (that's what I was told), the only features which could be operated were the power seats. There was a Lexus rep/assistant by the car, who asked me if I had any questions. Initially I said no, given that I have been immersed in details and articles of this car for months. But what I really wanted to see was the car in action. So I came by a second time to ask if there was a way to activate the NAVI screen, and test the GPS system. The rep asked a salesman if it was possible to get a key, but was told 'no, it's the Gen V anyway,' to which the rep offered to show me the Gen V on another vehicle. I of course answered that I was familar with the regular Gen V system, having used it on the IS and at other auto shows, but wanted to see the LS features...

I was getting more food when the rep came over to me, and offered me a chance to see another LS 460...in the back...with the NAVI system active!!!

Needless to say, I put the food down on the nearest table...and actually I forgot about the yummy morsels I left behind...

Now this is the FUN part. The rep walked me to the maintenance bay, which I've only been to once during the servicing of our LS. The bay was cleared of most cars, except for a LS 460 L on a lowered service bay platform. It was possibly Mercury Metallic, although I don't really remember the exterior color for some reason. Maybe it was because it was all about the interior--given that we couldn't drive the vehicle (Taste of Lexus soon to come...). Anyhow, the interior was furnished in black leather with brown walnut, and it looked great.

My +1 and I were joined by another interested guest, who I found out later was a BMW owner (7 series I think?). A Lexus product specialist/engineer greeted us, and invited us to sit inside the car, which was already running on accessories mode. He asked who we were and I let slip that I was a member of ClubLexus, to which he joked, "I've been to that site...there's lots of crazy propaganda on there!" After I mentioned CL, he refused to give me his name or let me take pictures. But he was really cool, and answered all our questions. This guy received his information firsthand from working with Lexus engineers in Japan, and said that he had tested the 'Parking Assist' (auto-park) on the Crown some 3 years ago. For the LS 460, he was with a group of US specialists that went to Japan to learn about the LS 460, and apparently they went through parts design, drive tests, etc on the car. Previously he'd been to Toyota City and done 1-on-1 training on the RX 400h. I asked him if he worked out of Torrance and he said he was from some other location.

To begin with, we looked at the XM NavTraffic which is one of the features I was asking about. He pressed 'I Agree' and the NAVI system loaded. Because we were in a garage and the signal was somewhat blocked, it took 20 seconds or so to connect to the live traffic data, and then the traffic data loaded instantly (the normal GPS map added details). The Lexus specialist confirmed that about 40+ US cities already had XM NavTraffic, with Denver the latest to be added to the list. All XM traffic updates occur every 3 minutes. When the system loaded it showed all the highways of the LA County area on the screen in different colors...red, yellow, and orange I think. The lines changed color depending on the traffic, and little yellow icons (POI icon shaped like a 4-sided traffic sign) appeared at the site of a traffic slowdown. Just touching one would bring up the info ("710 freeway--road accident--traffic slows to 10 mph"). Apparently, as your voice guidance continues, the navigation system will ask you if you want to reroute when bad traffic conditions arise. The system seemed quite useful and intuitive...the rep confirmed that you get 3 months of XM free with purchase (standard on the LS 460 L, available on the LS 460), and then a regular fee is required. The system looked great, and I LOVED how it's integrated into the NAVI so seamlessly.

Also, the option for regular NAVI info upgrades to the 30 GB HDD space continues, only there's no longer a DVD. Instead a port underneath the steering wheel space allows the dealer to connect to the car and upload NAVI updates. The NAVI screen looked crisp and beautiful, and in the words of the Lexus rep, 'just like a laptop.' Most of the other features were carried over from the Gen IV system, but the graphics were much sharper. I checked out the Memory Point icons/sounds, and it's about the same number of options, but much nicer looking.

I asked about the HDD and music, particularly whether only Audio CDs or possibly mp3-burned discs could upload, but he didn't want to "say something possibly incorrect that would then appear on ClubLexus." He did point out the Gracenote Audio CD system and said that (if I heard it correctly) even some CDs without the gracenote data, the system could receive updates and get the data somehow? I should have asked to test the audio system, see how much better it is over the already superlative ML system on the LS 430.

We got a taste of the 4-zone climate control, complete with ceiling diffusers and other features. It was very nice indeed...the rear seat was fantastic, with the reclining seats, radio controls, cool box, etc. Absolutely indulgent beyond belief. There was no 4-seater version available at this event, but the 460 L looks absolutely perfect to me, in fact better because I would want the 5 seats (even if the center seat has less headroom). Only thing missing--the RSES, but hopefully future model year packages can rectify that. The 4-zone climate control did take up some trunk space, but not anywhere near GS 450h proportions. The trunk space is still large enough, and adequate for my tastes (not planning to move across the country or anything--get a U-Haul for that!). The auto trunk door closing feature worked well, just like the RX with a single button push.

One thing I did confirm--there are no longer any center oscillating vents. The product specialist pointed out that with the new LS climate control (more vents, available 4-zone, etc.) the oscillating vents are no longer needed. Sitting inside the 460 L with the AC running, and with at least 10 different A/C vents/sources in the rear seat (at least 6 more than the 430 had back there), I agreed. On the 430, the oscillating vents made more sense but with the more advanced 460 cabin features, the mechanical vent feature is no longer needed when there are more vents and more advanced AC features. I didn't see the Ion filtration feature, but I forgot to look for it.

Some other cool features--of course SmartAccess with the push button was there, which the specialist spent some time explaining to the BMW owner (in particular the way the key senses inside/outside the car, etc.). He also mentioned that the SmartAccess credit card feature was available with the same exact functionality--except you can keep the key conveniently in your wallet (now THAT is a feature I'd really like to have ). The security indicators (flashing red light) are now on each door, and switch modes around 30 seconds after the car is locked (going from flashing to full red or something like that). Also, the folding side mirrors (like when set to Auto on the LS 430) activate at a different point on the 460. Specifically, they now activate when you lock/unlock the car (previously on the 430 they fold when the ignition switch is turned off). Now, when you unlock the car via SmartAccess (touch door handle), the mirrors fold open (when set to Auto, I assume), and fold when you lock the car (door handle button).

The specialist also demonstrated the Auto Parking Brake and the Brake Hold buttons. The Auto Parking Brake button is located above the Parking Brake switch; both are on the right side of the steering wheel, close to the Stop/Start ignition button. Pressing the 'Auto' button means that when you shift to P, the parking brake engages automatically, and when you shift out of P, the parking brake disengages automatically. Worked perfectly, from what I could see. Additionally, the Brake Hold button, located on the steering wheel, lets you take your foot off the brake pedal when the car is stopped at stoplights, and the car will not creep forward--looked very easy as well.

Then there was the Advanced Parking Guidance System. The car was on the service platform so he couldn't give us a full demonstration, but he showed us the system basics. First, he cleared up a major misperception--there is NO '4 foot threshold' requirement. Rather, that is what is considered safe...but the car will try to back into WHATEVER spot you put it in. It worked like this:

1. Press auto-parking button.
2. Select either (a) parallel park or (b) reverse park.
3. Targeting reticle and flag appears. Reticle will be red or green...
4. Adjust to fit by pressing arrows (reticle I think turns green when ok).
5. Start parking:
(a) press ok
(b) accelerate no more than 2.5 mph.

If you exceed that speed, or touch the wheel or brake, it will disengage. Also before doing the parallel parking, you need to drive a bit forward so the rear view camera has a sightline of the spot. There are 2 sensors on both sides, towards the fenders, that are used in the APGS.

The system seemed pretty straightforward, but I was skeptical about its practicality. The specialist however maintained that if you do it "30 or 40 times" you will be able to do it effortlessly. He also said that the system enables you to park as fast as you normally would. Myself, being rather technically oriented (I loved learning and mastering the LS 430 NAVI system, for instance), think this could be possible.

The specialist did mention that "You are going to see all these ads about the car that can park itself. That oversimplifies it. This car can HELP you park itself." He also mentioned the upcoming champagne glasses parking ad, which might start airing Friday, and said that the LS 460 APGS is perfectly capable of doing the parking as shown in the ad.

In demonstration, he activated the APGS in parallel park mode and it immediately showed a reticle in the service bay. There was the multidirectional arrow display to change the spot. He mentioned that the system "does not search parking spots for you," but rather simply recognizes nearby spaces. When he activated the APGS in reverse park mode, it showed a red targeting reticle near the maintenance bay wall. If we wanted to park there, he said, even though there was a wall, the car would still try to park there. So it is up to the driver to select the right space.

The AUX port for the audio system is located in the forward wall of the center compartment, with ample space (and no longer a 2 button setup--the upper shelf can be moved by hand when the compartment is open). It was an analog, not digital port, I believe. When asked about the Scion-iPod interface, the specialist explained that the LS 460 designers did not include that feature as it was not a high priority of the target market. Furthermore, he mentioned that the Scions are "not designed to last as long" (which did NOT mean durability) -- by this he meant that Scions were on a 36-month development cycle from new design to sales--thus including some very recent, somewhat experimental technologies, and with rapid turnover of designs. The LS 460, by contrast, was on a 6-year development cycle with the goal of developing "the most technologically advanced vehicle in the world."

As one example, he noted the heated and cooled seats (not 'ventilated' as in the fan on the ES). He said that the cooled seats, similar to the LS 430 system, were derived from NASA technology--specifically the technology used to cool astronauts' spacesuits. Cool, huh? Another point he made was that this cutting edge-technology vehicle was using first-on-market, but also tried and tested technology. Specifically, a lot of the LS 460 tech was "6 years old" and had evolved from tech tested in some form on other JDM cars.

I asked if the LS 430 had received such an extensive development process, and he suggested that it had gone through a similar development cycle. The reason why the LS 460 exhibits such a transformation, specifically in terms of the SWB, LWB versions, and new technology, he said, was because Lexus/Toyota listens to its customers. The customers wanted the LS to expand into these new model variants, and they are asking for this new technology--to take the LS and the luxury sedan market to the next level. I also asked about any additional details he could offer about the LS 600h L. He said that he had seen one, but all he could say were the new LED headlights, the 5.0 L engine, etc. I suppose those are the new features indeed, really you can't ask for much more!

Finally, I asked about the expected reliability of the first year LS 460 vehicles. He expressed confidence in the new vehicle--but I interjected that there was an unprecedented amount of new technology...to which he replied (paraphrasing) that "the SC 430 holds a record for fewest defects...I expect the LS 460 to beat that record." He also mentioned that "The first-generation LS 400 is considered to be the best, most reliable Lexus ever made...I believe the new LS 460 will match that standard." Needless to say, I came away impressed. And, knock on wood (the finely crafted LS wood ), I hope that becomes true--especially for the lucky first-year owners.

After that (and since the other people were leaving), I thanked the specialist and we left (even though I had a thousand other questions and could have stayed for a lot longer). I have to say, I felt very lucky to have gotten this opportunity to see the production vehicle up close. I already had very high expectations going in, and the car seemed to surpass them! The new LS looked great in person, and the features look fantastic. It seems like they indeed went all-out on this new vehicle. I have read that the driving dynamics have been improved, which is good. The styling I can say is definitely working--the car looks like a work of art. And the features, the cabin--this has always been an LS strength but this time it is a revolution of features that evolve the LS to the next level...it will be hard for the competition to keep up, IMO. This car is amazing.

Incidentally, as I was leaving Lexus of Glendale, I ran into this new billboard. As I was en route, this pic came out a bit fuzzy, but is the same as the current LS pic on the www.lexus.com main webpage. The text said, "Introducing the Long Wheelbase Lexus LS." I would add, a Tour de Force from Lexus.

Thank you to Lexus of Glendale, and to the Lexus representatives who were so informative and helpful--it was a great event!

Nice review!
I'm planning to attend the 'unveiling' at the Jacksonville Lexus store this Friday. I'm looking forward to seeing for myself that the new design does not, in person, look like another generic sedan the way it comes across in photos.

Enigma, I'm being honest here: This is the best review I have ever read. Period! Why? Because you talk about the car, THE CAR! You talk about the features, the details unlike C&D etc who mainly talk about performance and driving dynamics (which isn't the only thing I'm interested in the LS).
Thank you for spending time to write a great review.

Thanks for the comments, guys...

It is a very impressive vehicle indeed, and I liked it a lot. The seats also felt very comfortable too...there were other details that they went over, but it's somewhat dizzying after a while. Maybe had too much to drink, lol.

What about the front passenger seat memory buttons issue that you have been talking about for a long time, are they there & did you ask why they're not ?

I noticed that for sure and I took a picture showing the passenger side seat with no memory settings. But I remember Rominl had already asked a specialist before and they didn't know why, although it was one of the questions I might have gotten into had I stayed longer. I was more interested in asking questions about features we hadn't heard about or details that needed clarification, such as the XM NavTraffic, AC system, etc.

For the front passenger seat memory, I have a feeling that it might have some slightly peculiar reason, such as why the passenger side seat only has the legrest, or why there are driver side adjustment buttons for the passenger seat (no fighting with a passenger who has memory buttons too?), or why the JDM version has the fold-down passenger seat headrest.

I wish it could've been longer so I can ask more, but I didn't want to take up even more time and the party was scheduled to end at 9, which is when we left.
