Default SAFETY COMPARO: LS460 vs S550 by german AutoBild (guess who scores better:))

Who has the better protection gel?

As the safest car so far the S-class was considered to the world. Now Lexus with the LS 460 comes and wants to put the crown to the whole one on. With security an exciting comparison.

From January horn and Dierk Möller Sunday it are were called still not at all so long ago, there those protection gel in the car crunch zone, seat belt and EXP. that are long standard. Even small cars have now belt systems, in addition a Armada of Airbags and each quantity of electronics, already devised, which holds us course. Day after day engineers devise ever more complex safety systems.

The best would be natural to prevent an accident completely not to leave it happened only at all. And in this tendency Mercedes and Lexus supply themselves now a race on highest level. A first comparison of the two luxury steamers S 500 and LS 460 is to show, who settled its homework better. But we rented a test track on Mallorca, where the Lexus straight of the press is introduced.

Lexus moves forward with ten airbags

Both do not offer extra security free of charge. To the 82,000 euro basic priceof a Lexus LS 460 again 14,600 euro impact come for the complete safety package. WithMercedes S 500 we land inclusive round around protection with more than 100,000 euro. Money surely put on. Thus Lexus holds a record-suspicious Airbag assortment ready for example with ten air bags. How protect effectively however in case of an accident, only a later Crash-Test must show.

There are no doubts over the handling. In the case of both luxury sedans. They convince with one throughout sovereigns appearance. Cleanly co-ordinated chassis and the radical in each case and error free supporting anti-centrifuge assistance hold the ships on safe course. To this way thus approximately resembling and prevails. It becomes correctly exciting, if we compare the Assistenzsysteme. Question: Which car helps better to avoid an accident? Or: In which car it is more easily to umfahren a danger situation?

Point one: Evade

With Mercedes the ESP intervenes in the brake system and in the engine/transmission price increase. The Wankstabilisierung ABC helps that the body dives less into the feathers/springs. Lexus continues an important step. Apart from the same ESP functions guidance strength, Lenkübersetzung and the chassis are changed. Already before a possible obstacle (with Mercedes only during avoiding!) if the pneumatic springs harden, then the body inclination is minimized. The most important aspect: The system makes the Lenkübersetzung smaller. Like that a faster direction change is possible with clearly less steering movement.

A 42-Volt-Elektromotor guarantees even with extremely hard impulses continuously small control forces. In the alternate attempt the LS reacts thereby extremely spontaneously, can playing easily be directed. A further advantage of the active steering element: Also after sudden avoiding succeeds more easily to come again into the correct trace. In unstable driving conditions the technology with correcting guidance impulses compensates possible driving errors. Thus the LS 460 reacts for example when breaking out the tail with easy guidance corrections.

Point two: Radar Technology

Mercedes over its radar eye in the radiator grille if an obstacle recognizes, it warns the driver. If its reaction precipitates too zaghaft, the brake assistant throws himself energetically in things. If the driver does not react at all, the S-classbrakes automatically with maximally 40 per cent of its brake performance. Still more thought out the Lexus. Apart from radar technology additionally an infrared camera looks for objects on the road in the LS. Within the infrared range so also “yield” obstacles fall (e.g. Animals) up. The radar jet scans besides in more finely defined subranges than with Mercedes. With it identify the Lexus system also narrow objects like a motorcycle clearly.

As is the case for the S-class early a warning goes to the driver also with the LS. If it does not brake, the system with 60 per cent of maximally possible delay intervenes. One feels that then more violently than in Mercedes. If it should come under identical conditions to an impact, then the Japanese would meet with clearly lower speed the obstacle.

Point three: Driver Monitoring

In the Lexus also the driver is gecheckt. Infrared lenses on the steering column examine the attention of the Chauffeurs. Is it possibly diverted? Does it turn the straight head to the side? If, then a reference takes place with threatening danger acoustically or by short brake impulse. Even with darkness the Lexus eye scans the face courses of the driver.

Point four: Trace Retaining Control

Still another Lexus plus. With dangeroussecond sleep electronics intervenes. When the over driving lateral carriageway markings the electromechanical steering element becomes active, steers the vehicle back on the roadway. Works quite well, as long as a hand at the steering wheel remains. Which by the way applies to all the safety miracle technology: It does not replace the driver. Its attention is still the best accident prevention. That was in former times like that, and which will in such a way remain probably still another whole time.

Conclusion: The first meeting of the safest cars of the world brought out still no clear winner. Because during our test travels on Mallorca we could not measure braking distances, drive no VDA track switching (moose test) and naturally make no Crashversuche. But: The comparison showed that the Japanese with the Lexus put the safety measuring pole with the active systems for accident prevention on a new level. Lexus philosophy is thereby another than with Mercedes. More work is removed from less experienced drivers, it comes with dangerous situations better clearly. Thus it stands for 1:0 now for Lexus - continuation follows

Love the night vision! It's kind of a gimmick, but that and the heads-up display are two MB features I hope Lexus adopts soon.

Waaay to go Lexus!!! I wouldn't have expected the LS to beat the S-class given Benz' safety reputation. But to have the LS 460 outdo the S550 in multiple categories, that is brilliant!!! The flagship class safety race has gotten more competitive!

not to mention that in europe, safety features in S class were what they marketed most in their TV ads :-)

Good showing for Lexus especially from a German mag.

Painful translation.

enigma - had to read the article to see where you got the point that Lexus won but that last paragraph is contradictory, starting by saying there's no clear winner.

But I'm so glad Lexus has pushed the envelope in so many areas.

I also wish they get the night vision system - that looks awesome on the S.

Yes, there was no clear winner based on the translation. But the Google translation suggests that the Lexus outdoes the Benz in multiple areas. In the radar technology area, they say "still more thought out the Lexus...radar jet scans besides in more finely defined subranges than with Mercedes." They point out the driver monitoring, mention the lane keep technology as "still another Lexus plus," and conclude "The comparison showed that the Japanese with the Lexus put the safety measuring pole with the active systems for accident prevention on a new level. Lexus philosophy is thereby another than with Mercedes. More work is removed from less experienced drivers, it comes with dangerous situations better clearly. Thus it stands for 1:0 now for Lexus."

A different philosophy to pre-collision is noted as the Lexus automatically brakes "more violently than in Mercedes. If it should come under identical conditions to an impact, then the Japanese would meet with clearly lower speed the obstacle."

In the past, the S-class has run away with safety innovations while everyone else plays catchup. In this case, the LS has new safety innovations of its own...and hopefully they work better than the S-class "Pre-Safe" where that live filmed demonstration was an embarassment.

Also the last photo caption says:

1:0 for Lexus. The comparison showed that the Japanese with the Lexus put the safety measuring pole with the active systems for accident prevention on a new level. Crash and moose tests are however still pending.
Moose tests, uh...but the other stuff seems pretty clear.

Please don't quote the translation more, it's torture to read.

Hehe, I'll stop. I'm thinking the Google translation works better for Spanish or French, Japanese translation is as alien as the German translation, if not more.

It's awesome that the new LS wins the safety comparison vs the new S Class. The new LS does have several world firsts over the new S Class, so it is not too surprising that it wins the safety comparison.

Yeah it's a real shame the point one (evade) and point four (trace retaining control) aren't even valid in the US-spec LS. Along with many other good stuff available for JDM and Europeans, we're really treated like 2nd-rated market by Lexus.

Don't worry. We'll get all that in 600hL as optional Advanced Pre-Collision System Package and hopefully it will make it's way to '08 LS460.

I don't know why they saved it for 600h, maybe they want to make technological boom once it debuts on the market or maybe they want to test it first in markets where LS sells in low volumes.
Either way it is going to be a pricey option like it is in Europe. In other to have it you have to upgrade to the most expensive optional luxury packages. That pushes the price of Euro spec SWB LS460 beyond $120,000!
