Active noise control works best for sound fields that are spatially simple. The classic example is low-frequency sound waves traveling through a duct, an essentially one-dimensional problem. The spatial character of a sound field depends on wavelength, and therefore on frequency. Active control works best when the wavelength is long compared to the dimensions of its surroundings, i.e., low frequencies .....
As an aside, I've always wondered why, when I lift an earpiece off my ear, I don't hear any of the "Anti-noise" from the earpiece.
Just out of curiosity, when I get my LS600hL, I'll have to try the Bose headset while I'm driving to see what difference it makes. Of course, there won't be much noise to start off with...

Another benefit to active noise cancellation (at least as implemented on the last-gen Prelude and current RL) is that the microphones also monitor the sound coming from the speakers for distortion. If there is any, they automatically limit the volume to prevent speaker damage and (more likely) crummy sound.
