Talking SWB drivers, are you having Wind noise problems?

I just want to do a poll on this problem.

I have a SWB and I get wind noise @ speed over ~45mph.. or when it's windy outside..

I guess this survey doesn't apply to 460L owners.. LUCKY YOU~

I have it. It is annoying. I just wrote to Lexus. Let's see what they respond.
Once it is a known and documented issue they should to disclose this.

I do, and have noted so. It's not that bad, but it's there.

I didn't use your third option, because I may learn to dislike over time.

This is quite surprising. I guess Lexus didn't really do their homework on this car. It's first and foremost a "luxury" car, and noise is quite important in "luxury" cars.

Hopefully, Lexus will find a cure and deliver the silence you thought you purchased.

Maybe they should consider making the laminated glass available as an option for the SWB too if not make it standard for all versions of the LS460 if people are getting picky about wind noise.

does laminated glass mean it's thicker/quieter? I thought it just means it's UV-protected etc..

It's not about being picky.. not sure if you drove one before.. but @ mere 40mph there's NOTICEABLE noise.. and @ freeway cruising speeds of ~70mph.. the noise is pretty loud..

no other cars in the family has this problem..

anyhow.. my car has been @ the dealer right now for 3 days.. they are sending some corporate guy to look at the problem and see how they can fix it..

Default And that's a big IF, I might add...

How the laminated glass fix can effectively reduce wind noise is beyond me. The overall thickness of the two glass sections sandwiched with a film the thickness of a hair can't be that much greater than a single pane. What are we talking about here? .001" difference? Considering that the wind induced noise we are discussing is probably over 20db +/- difference over an acceptable level, the laminated glass could hardly dampen the wind noise that much. From an engineering point of view, sound transmission occurs from the induced vibration passing through, and you'd have to have at least a one inch air gap (better insulator) between the panes for any noticeable result.

They're also going to add some insulation as well as the laminated glass is what the tech told me. Joe Daddy, please let us know what they're doing to correct your problem. I'm waiting for the TSB before going back to the dealer again. I'm also waiting on the TSB for the transmission as well...

Based on the Lexus Website for US models, the LS460 does not have laminated glass and the LS460L does have the laminated glass on the side windows.

You can check for yourself here:
http://www.lexus.com/models/LS/detai...fications.html

Lexus Website states under "exterior features":
For the LS460:
*Water-repellent windshield and front-door glass with UV reduction
*Exterior glass with UV reduction

For the LS460L:
*Water-repellent windshield and front-door glass with UV reduction
*Exterior glass with UV reduction
*Laminated side glass

I would rather trust the Lexus website rather than an older PDF doc (9/15/06) supplied by 460LEX with at least one inaccuracy about having the sunroof as an optional feature for the 460 which is wrong....the sunroof is standard in the US for both the 460 and 460L.

Talked with the head tech at the dealership this morning. He said Lexus is not saying what the fix will be for the wind noise. He removed the side view mirror from a LS460 and said there was a noticeable reduction in noise but that didn't eliminate all of it. I hope the fix doesn't include window replacement since mine have a medium tint on them.

I am wondering if it is the outside rear view mirrors that are causing the excessive wind noise.

I tried folding the mirrors at 65 mph...no change either louder or quieter. I would figure it would change one way or the other

At first the field fix was to seal off the mirror and tighten the seal on the window. They said the drain hole was causing turbulence. It did some good, but I continue to have wind noise.
