Default Dependability and Lexus?

Hello everyone,

I love Lexus and i know like most that its the bigger brother to toyota. My ? is to those of you who have owned lexus cars in the past just how dependable are they? I ask this because i am an average joe who loves the new LS, but cant afford one right now. I am thinking about waiting 4-5 years and picking up one with some higher milage on it for a price range within my budget?

Please let me know what you all think.

Much appreciated,

Lex,

I'm a first time owner of a Lexus brand, but I think regardless of how many Lexuses you have had in the past, this is the first year model and no one knows what to expect. There are some people on this board that have had transmission issues, including my self, and some people are having wind noise problems. The car has been out for only 5 - 6 months at the most. Too early to predict, in my opinion. But if you want an advise based on the previous experience, I think most will say that Lexus is the most reliable car ever made.

Thanks, alot Dimapb, I really appreciate it. I probably should have posted this in the previous gen section for more reliable answers. I know that some things have changed with the new year but i just want to get a general idea of how long these cars can go for.

Thanks, alot.

This is my 5th Lexus. The only one I had problems with was my 1991 LS. The rack and pinion went out along with the power steering pump at 90K.

I have owned a 92 LS (had it for 7 years), a 99 GS400, an 04 LS 430, and now have the 07 LS 460. All of them have been very reliable - on the 04 LS430 - all I did was basic maintenance - never an issue. The GS had a couple of rattles that were resolved by the dealer.

All of them were dependable - I never had a day when the car would not start or could not be driven. I also owned a couple of Jaguars - XJ and XK coupes, those had to be towed a couple of times and had to wait for parts comng from the UK soon.

When you are ready to buy, I'd suggest that you check the latest Consumer Reports reliability ratings. They will give you the best read on the cars you are interested in.

Of course that is no guarantee that you won't get a bad one. Check it thoroughly, or if you don't know what to look for, bring it to a trusted mechanic.

BTW, stop getting those $5 lattes at Starbucks and you'll have the car sooner than you think!

As far as I can tell, if you get the car from someone that didn't abuse the car you'll always be in good shape. Heck, even if it's abused these cars are like tanks, they just don't brake. Having owned American and German cars in the past, I can tell Japanese engineering is ages ahead when it comes to reliability. This is my first Lexus, mine is the SWB LS-460 and I'll never buy anything else unless it's an exotic or some Bentley.
