Talking Wow.. I am impressed with the gas mileage (28.1 MPG!)

Ok.. memorial day weekend, Vegas, family trip, ~600 miles (roundtrip).
We had to take two cars (LS460 + RX400H), guess who won.
Temperature ~80-100 degrees (~85 degress most of the time)
98% highway/ 2% city, no traffic 75~80mph normal speed
A/C on LOW, Chevron Supreme 91

Here are the stats.
LS460 4250lb, 4 Adults, ~40lbs of luggage, 38 PSI tire, 28.1 MPG
RX400H 4100lb, 2 Adults, -20lbs of luggage, 34 PSI tire, 26.2 MPG

unbelievable, the LS had about ~400 more pounds of weight and still managed to get a better mileage than our hybrid. More power and room..

Let's not talk about the wind noise though.. it was windy in the desert.
I thought my ears were going to pop.. (i am not trying to be funny)..
you know how your ears get numb, when you ride coach in an airplane? Well that's the feeling I had when I got to my destination...

btw.. i think I could certainly do 28.5~29mpg if the weather was a little cooler, no A/C, and 1 or 2 passengers~ Does this car get the best mileage for it's size? Probably the diesel A8 has it beat i bet...

not to mention lower coefficient of drag. The LS has a Cd of 0.26. The RXh is probably in the neighbourhood of 0.30.

Either way, that's pretty good for a luxury car!

yeah...and also on freeway the battery from the hybrid doesnt really help. It basically runs just on the 3.3 engine, which EPA estimates a 24-25 hwy mileage.

So, with the advanced port and direct engine, with all the great tech they put into that engine, it is rated at 28 hwy isnt it?

91 isnt mid grade. Here in New England we have 93 but in some areas premium is 91. Mid grade is 89. 28 mpg is an awesome number!!!

91 is the highest "normal premium" gas you can get in California. We don't have 93 like you guys do.. ..
maybe with 93, i could have gotten even better mileage... high compression engines love high octange fuel~~

DAMN!! 28mpg with all that extra weight cruising at 75-80mph is incredibly good for a big sedan!!

Just got back from a weekend trip (Atlanta, GA <-> New Orleans, LA). Just me and a couple of pieces of luggage.

On the trip down (ATL -> MSY) I used Chevron Supreme (93 Octane). Avg speed ~75MPH w/ 30.5 MPG

On the return trip (MSY -> ATL) I used BP/Amoco ultimate (93 Octane). Avg speed ~77MPH w/ 28.5 MPG

Each leg of the trip was 494 miles, and I did each leg with a single tank of gas (with a little to spare, too). Unfortunately, the fill-up was $65 ... eesh !

Amazing machine, if you ask me !

Ah Ha! Does anyone know if the engine for CA is de-tuned for the lower octane?
