LS460 maintenance experience
#3
I bought a 460L in November. Has Bridgestone EL 42's. 8000 miles so far.
Only problem so far has been the engine oil rattle that was repaired per the TSB.
Nothing loose, no rattles, no wind noise. Tires are fine so far as far as I am concerned. Perhaps it will be a problem later on.
Perhaps they did a better job in terms of quality with the L cars.

Just curious, with the German cars you have owned have you not experienced similar or more serious problems? That has been my experience which is why I am asking From what I am seeing, rattles, wind noise and transmission hiccups seem to be the main items from the threads. Although unacceptable, I'll take any of these over my I-drive going out in my 7 series BMW, trunk hydrolics going out, power windows going out, etc. Love the handling better...just don't miss the issues or the electronic issue I experienced with BMW or with Mercedes. What has been your experience with German cars?

I have owned 2 Porsche vehicles and several BMW's. There are a lot more problems with German cars than with any Lexus I've owned. BTW this is my
5th Lexus. I might buy a new BMW X5 if they come out with a twin turbo diesel motor next year...

I just got back from the dealer. After speaking with the parts manager
the shelf to my glove box was replaced, Michelins Pilots HXMXM4's have been ordered to replace my Bridgestones Turanza EL42's at Lexus exspense.
The glass for the wind noise repair has been ordered but the repair kit can not be ordered and must be sent to the dealer by Lexus so the parts manager is trying to find out when the kit will be sent, an adjustment to the mirrors is also a part of the repair to fix the wind noise.
Craig, I see where your car is sceduled for the wind noise repair on July 24th,
it looks like you are going to beat me so I look forward to seeing your post after the repair is made on your car.
Reading this forum does pay off and for the most part the information is accurate and reliable. I was getting ready to just go out and buy new tires but after reading the post where owners who were not happy with their tires
were getting them replaced by Lexus I decided to do the same but I must also say that the parts manager and one service writer at my dealership have
always been fair with me and for that I am grateful.

Don't want to bash the german cars to much, one of the reasons I started checking out the Lexus was my wife had an 04 RX330 with ZERO problems over her 3yr lease. My 04 S430 did not spend alot of time in the shop but everytime it did I was spending 800-900 at a time. Hopefully the reliablility of the RX will carry over into the LS, So far I am very happy with the switch.

I noticed the rattle when I walked around the front of the car with the engine idling. This was with about 6,000 miles on the odometer. Took it to the dealer and they had received the TSB posted above the day before. They did the fix and it has been silent since then.
Below is a list of some other TSB's FYI.

Lets not forget that it is a new design. It's typical that a new model is going to have some bugs that corporate needs to address. Either that, or the Japanese engineers drank too much sake that year.
In time, I'm sure that Lexus will finally nail the product to where it's supposed to be.
C
"How many days you got?"
"Nine days."
"Nine days? You need more sake."
