Theyare different!
Just my 2cents. I own both - 04 LS430 and 07 LS460 L. The LS430 by far has a much softer ride, smoother transmission shifts and brakes. And gasp - I do have wind noise in my LS430 as well as the 460. Guess I don't really notice it since I usually have the audio on ear blast. Anyways, I found the difference to be so aggravating that my husband now has the 460 and I kept the 430. But, IMHO, the looks and ML stereo on the 460 far surpasses the 430. So - if I want a good ride, I take the 430, if I want "good looks" I take the 460. Sorry

I had an '04 LS430 (80k miles) and now have a LS460 (16k miles).
My first impression of the 460 was that it was much firmer than the 430. A big part of the reason for this is that the car was delivered with tires inflated to 41 psi. The dealer said they do that intentionally to give the car a sportier ride. I hated it (loved the way the 430 smoothed out the road). So I set the tires @ 33 PSI per the door sticker. This made a world of difference. The car is now almost as smooth as the 430, but still feels more responsive.
As for the transmission, I find the 460 shifting to be as good, if not better than the 430, with the exception, of course, of the intial engagement of the torque converter from a stop (who was the genius that came up with that idea). But it sounds like a TSIB was just released to deactivate that feature.
As for the seats, while not my ideal seat, I find them much more comfortable than the 430 seats. As a matter-of-fact, the driver's seat in the 430 was so bad, it's the main reason I moved to the 460. I'd probably still have the 430, otherwise.
My 460 is noticably quieter than my 430, which was pretty quiet. I don't seemed to be cursed with the wind noise problem that others are reporting. (I took delivery on Dec 26.)
In summary, the 460 is definitely a step up from the 430, there a just a few kinks that are to be expected in the first model year of any card.
