Unhappy 2007 LS460L with broken valve spring

My brothers L threw a rod out of the head. I know he has under 10K miles, and the dealer has offered to do everything, up to and including replacement of the entire car. They are supposed to have the engine repaired and the car back to him next week. Anyone else ever heard of something like that happening to a new LS?

Blame it on the computerized robot that put it together. I am not kidding.

I had a 2005 Tundra truck with a V8 do the same with less then 300 miles on it. Toyota had factory reps fly in the next day and they concluded that it was " the robot"..... they gave us another new truck they same day. Just listening in on their conversation they were going to pack and ship the engine somewhere for detailed analysis.

I have seen that also....I was working at a Acura dealership and we had just delivered the new RL. Guy broke down about 200 miles after he got the car. Acura flew in a couple of guys within 2 day (they spoke no english) and the problem was with the 4wheel drive set up. They put in a new VTM (transfer case) in the car, shipped back the old one for study, and we gave the guy a new car. **** happens with a new product, but hey, thats why ALL manufacturers give a basic warranty and optional extended warranty on electronic/mechanical items. They know it is going to break eventually (unfortunately sometimes earlier than others) but nothing built by todays standard is going to be perfectly bulletproof!!

That happened to my Acura. I had about 10k miles on the ODO. They replaced the entire engine for me.

Nice to hear how quick the manufacturers are to fix the situation and look into why it happened.

yup, i agree. like i said, it happens, and lexus is not perfect. but it's how they deal with the problem that's the key. flying in senior tech and corporate people the next day to look at the problem AND at the same time covering the customers and take care of them, i think that's more important

It must be mandated to fly in a non english speaker, as my brother said that is exactly what happened in this case. They are going to fix the car, and let him assess his satisfaction level. As he waited over 5 months for this car to be built, he is hoping it will be OK. The part that bothered me is that they had a tech come to his house (in response to his original call to service dept) - tech drove out a loaner, hooked up code reader/diagnostic unit, told service manager that it was unclear what was wrong (showed #2 and #6 cylinders not firing). He was then instructed to DRIVE THE CAR 20 MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP! I cannot believe that they would not call for a flatbed and possibly created more damage. I was stunned by that detail.

Unfortunately my brother is a molecular biologist, not much of a mechanic. I have mentioned to him to note that he was not given the option to truck the car to the dealer. I am many states away from him, and speculate that the tech driving the car caused the slung rod, as I would like to assume that no one would dream of driving such a car with a hole in the engine.

Tell him you will trade your ES350 for his broken LS460 as a favor. Tell him you will be able to take care of it since you have more auto knowledge.

This is a first for me to hear of. At least Lexus is gonna take care of it.

And like they said before, It happens to all makes. Its how they respond that makes the company stand out.
