Default ML Center Speaker - Static/Popping

Only seems to happen at high volumes, regardless of source.

It seems more like an amp issue than a speaker issue.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? It seems to rear its ugly head at volume 52 and greater.

That's quite a bit more than my ears could stand, and you may be pushing it beyond the speakers' limits. Still, there have been some amp related issues with symptoms somewhat similar to the ones you are experiencing. Do an amplifier search within this forum.

Oh, what the hell, look here.

One question before you go to your dealer. Are you using the "Surround Sound" feature? If so, turn it off and see if that improves the problem. That feature works when you have a source that actually has surround sound, and may create problems in normal sound.

Had a problem with the door speaker which they replaced and still didn't fix it. After several attemps they replaced the door panel and that fixed it. Must have been something in the panel viberating. May have the same thing going on with the center speaker doing the same to the dash.

Sounds like your amp is clipping. When an amp goes beyond its operating range, it will clip or distort. This is particularly harsh sounding in transistor amps, tubes are much smoother when they clip. The volume setting is not absolute, but is a measure of how much increase in amplification from the input signal to the output signal. So if you have a very soft sound, having the volume of 52 is OK. If you have a loud sound, then 52 will clip. Sound level is logarithmic also, that a relatively small increase in volume - 3 db, takes double the power, and 10 db increase which is double the sound level is 10 times the power. So, it is pretty easy to clip your amp if you are playing a moderately loud song at 52. BTW, I tried playing some music at 52 in my car and I couldn't stand it. Have you had your hearing checked recently?

I find that different audio sources seem to play at the same volume only if you set the volume **** accordingly. Some of my mp3 files sound just as loud at 52 as a radio station at 20.
