if you set it to s1, then it will be in 1st gear forever
i have done my share of aggressive driving on the ls460l. it was aggressive, but i didn't wait until redline to shift. i shift a bit lower than that, at least in the situations i was in, it was "enough"
and in fact most of the time i just kept the car in D, or just flip it over to S so it stays in s6 (max). that's enough for me to get the power. once you start driving aggressively for 1-2 miles, the throttle becomes very sensitive

im pretty sure, though ive never tried, that when the car reaches beyond redline and you dont change gears, then the car will cut fuel from the engine so that you dont damage the car.
so, knowing that, it would probably be best to keep it in D and just let the car shift. If you floor it, the car will go all the way to redline and shift at the appropriate time.

there are advantage of the sport shift, but only when you know what you want to achieve

I wont lie... I have hit the rev limiter in my 00 RX300 many times... you just keep bouncing, fuel is never cut off. Then again I don't have 8 gears. or an extra 7 years of technology. haha. but I can tell you that I lose power at like 5900 when my redline is like 6200, so I hardly redline it anymore because there isn't much of a point to. my exhaust sounds the same at 6200 as it does at 5900, except for the bouncing

ooooooooooooh,
i'm always driving my car in manual sporty mode.
when you start on gear number one it will move automaticlly to the second gear and the same between all gears.

otherwise, it's pointless to have manual mode coz' it's not holding any gears
