Default Lexus Malaysia launches LS 460 5-seat version

Lexus Malaysia has added one more model to their line-up here in Malaysia, the short wheelbase version of the Lexus LS. The Lexus LS460 is 120mm shorter than the LS460L but you may not notice it at first glance because it manages to maintain similiar proportions, unlike the luxury sedans from other manufacturers where you can see the rear door is obviously much longer.

Priced at RM663,117.50 on the road with insurance, it is more than RM100k cheaper than the LS460’s RM797,583.50 price tag. Under the hood is the same 380hp 492Nm 4.6 liter V8. The rear legroom remains impressive, and a single rear bench is now used to accomodate 3 passengers at the rear. The LS460L’s could only seat 2 because of the latter’s two individual rear seats.

Because of this, the single rear Ottoman massage seat is also gone. Also missing in this version are the ventilated leather seats and the rear entertainment system with 9 inch display. All the other premium equipment in the LS460L has been carried over including the impressive 19 speaker Mark Levinson 7.1 sound system.

i dont get it, they (as in Malaysia) only had executive seating packages (only 4 seaters)? so now they have regular arm rests like us in the back now? (so they can have 5 seats??)

Correct, the LS 460 L in Malaysia was only the Exec 4-seat version thus far.

Probably because the only people who can afford this car are Execs, Politician or Army Generals. The Malaysian Ringgit doesn't buy much when it comes to heavily excised imports. The article also alludes to the stark difference between other car makers' long & short wheelbases. This is something that I have always noticed about Audi, BMW & Merc. Their stretched cars look like they just came out of an after market Limo shop - the rear doors & glass look very tacky, like they cut the car and welded a straight filler piece in there... Unlike Lexus who took the time and re-profiled so it looks properly finished...

Execs, politicians etc. sound exactly like the target, I just did an online conversion:

797,583.50 Malaysian Ringgit = 239,480 US Dollar

Also I read an interview with the Lexus exec pictured above and he mentions that he felt the Malaysia market was not yet ready for hybrid intro...imagine the LSh cost...

I agree, the current LS did a very good job in making the lines look fluid on both SWB and LWB models.

Living next door to Singapore, whose outlandish import duties coupled to the government's attempts to suppress the number of vehicles on the island, it must still seem like a bargain for those lucky Malays.

The LS460 is only available in the 4 seat version in Indonesia too. In Singapore all the long wheelbase cars are 4 seat versions but the hybrid is available in both 4 or 5 seats. In Singapore for the LS460 SWB, the rear seats do come with the rear seat upgrade package so there should be ventilated seats (but from one of the interior pix, the Malaysian car has the rear seat upgrade package which means that there are ventilated seats) but in Singapore it doesn't come standard with the Mark Levinson audio system which is quite a bummer. BTW, Malaysian politicians can only use the Proton Perdana, there was quite an uproar when the government bought 14 Mercedes E200 earlier this year.

That's interesting info, 'cost-cutting' is not the first thing I would have thought when buying an import car. I guess the 4-seat version will work well for the chauffeured rich crowd, be they diplomats or CEOs or other esteemed owners.

That's right, I forgot about the Proton. After all, why encourage the locals to buy homemade and then drive imports? I'm sure Proton's board of directors is under strict orders to come up with something less mundane...
