Official from Lexus Europe - No More Frozen Navigation Screen (no more NAVI lockout)
#16
It would be great if this option were available for the US...they could even bury an override button in the menus so that only those who really want it will take the initiative and do so.

Why would Lexus be so worried about lawsuits about accidents that happen while the driver is using the nav system, when Mercedes, Honda, Acura, Audi and BMW aren't?

Not sure, I'm skeptical actually that lawsuits are the sole reason. It's possibly part of a different safety philosophy. They have focused a lot on the driver paying attention to the road (even creating the Driver Monitor System for the LSh).

Even if that is the case, I find it annoying, enraging and infantalizing that the decision to push buttons in a car would not be left up to me, the driver, who is ultimately responsibe for what happens in the event of an accident. In addition, there are a myriad of other buttons in the car which can already be pressed while the car is in motion, such as the radio, suspension climate, and those buttons are not frozen. And what about the safety of having to stop on the side of a highway so that the nav system can be programmed, or the incredible hassle of having to depart from your route to stop in order to do the same, all in an expensive, luxury vehicle.

Can't Lexus just display a warning telling the user to use the navi while driving with their own discretion and that Lexus will not assume any responsibility for accident caused while driving?
Lawsuits are not that tough to avoid. The GTR voids warranty if a person uses the launch control and turns off the VDC. McDonalds writes a warning on their hot coffee to prevent lawsuits.
And it's really a pain when addresses can't be entered while driving. Having to pull over each time to use the navi is really a hindrance.
Just my two cents.

OK..can you elaborate on that? Everything is unlocked while the car is in motion? How can we get in on the services of your "Prestigious Society Hack"? Sounds like a service that a lot of us would like to take advantage of.

My portable Nuvi operates at all times. You have to press an accept icon that gives warning and disclaims liability while driving. Lots safer to operate the Nuvi, or any navigation, than to look at maps while driving IMO.

The difference is that in Europe people know how to drive. That's all. Take F-1 for example:
Senna -> Brazil
Schumacher -> Germany
Hamilton -> England
Prost -> France
Scott Speed -> US but wait... Red Bull?... Where is this guy now?... Ah forget it, lets keep the nav locked.
