So I noticed that Lexus updated their website with the AWD LS 460. It has a bit less HP than the RWD variant. Is this result of AWD engineering or was this done on purpose to keep the 600h competitive?

460 (AWD): 16/23 MPG, 0-60 in 5.9 seconds
600h: 20/22 MPG, 0-60 in 5.5 seconds.

AWD does affect/reduce the performance of any vehicle due to mechanical efficiency losses, however this is compensated on the 600 with the addition of the DC traction motors. Also, the AWD is dragging around an extra 400lbs...

Oh def. true. However, drivetrain loss wouldn't be factored into the numbers on the Lexus website as they do not reflect the power going to the wheels. I think Ive got some researching to do!

I think starting with the 2008 models all manufacturers had to report effective (or true)horsepower. I know the Infiniti M45 had to reduce their claimed HP from 335 to 325 due to this requirement.

That began in 2007. It still doesn't explain a discrepency between AWD and RWD LS. Perhaps this is the same version of the 4.6L that is in the GS460, which lacks direct injection. I guess that would make sense, given both vehicles have hybrid halo models. Hmmm....

I did test drive a 2008 ( not all wheel, obviously ) and with the standard sound system. There is sufficient difference in the sound quality so that, for me, who loves good music, the M-L was well worth it. The AWD does not feel signifiantly different than the 2008 with regard to any "nose-heaviness". I was concerned about the extra weight, but the car is fairly nimble with all that horsepower. I was also interested in the "wind noise" issue talked about at length on another post, but I cannot hear any excessive noise, yet. ( It could be that I have been running the stereo full tilt ! ). This car is rock solid !
Congrats!!! What a nice car to have as a new Lex owner. I went from a GS300 to an LS430 to the LS460.

The mark lev is night and day to the base system. My 07 was just rear ended while i was driving on I95 and Statefarm might total it out but mostly due to the cost of labor (from what she told me)

So i started looking at some 09's in my local area (for now) just to listen to what the base stereo sounded like. I hate buying brand new (unless there is a huge sticker discount) and that mark lev/nav package is a hefty $7500 addition. I figure I might settle for the smaler package without the mark lev. But no way. That base stereo system sounds like crap. I would get it if i could find a local stereo shop that would upgrade the system but lexus makes that almost impossible. We lexus owners never settle for less which is why we buy lexus in the 1st place. so now I have to go hunting for an

White/Tan
Mark Lev/Nav Package (I think this was the $7200 lux package)

I found a couple with too many miles. I want somewhere under 12K which is what my previous one had.

Back to you, soon you will be saying, Man, how come I didnt buy lexus years ago? They are truly the best in the biz

You will love this friggin car man. One warning though. Try not to get use to the backup camera because as soon as you rent a car (for whatever reason) without such an option, you will feel helpless backing out of a parking space!!!! Those Damn Clever Lexus engineers!!!
