Default Dashboard Rattels - Usually In Cold Weather

Does anybody have these symptoms? I bought my LS 460 last year in summer. Around December time frame, with only 2200 miles on and with cold weather in Los Angeles area set upon, I started to hear rattling sound from the dashboard when I changed lane over the dividers or went through bumpy road. The Lexus dealership acknowledged this problem and fixed it. The sound went away through most part of this year. But again, since last couple of days, in December (believe it or not), the sound has come back. I wonder if this has anything to do with cold weather shrinking the foam inside the dashboard and bumping against the glass? Any comments?

Check out this thread. There is a TSIB for the dash rattle. Don't know whether your dealer fixed according to the service bulletin, but mine has been rattle free since the fix

Oops, that didn't have the correct link. Check out this one. The TSIB list has one specifically for the dash rattle. Good luck

Does the car still need to be under warranty in order to fix a TSIB?

Thanks bsims 01.

I have returned the car to the dealership this morning along with copy of the TSB. The repair is under warranty: 50000 miles or 48 months. The mechanic drove with me and agreed with the defect. The car has only 6200 miles on and needed two repairs for the same defect. It’s shame that Lexus quality is deteriorating.

You have chosen to disrespect thousands of finest engineers on the planet, who have built the highest quality production automobiles in the world.

I am an engineer by profession with lots of manufacturing experience. So, you may consider me to be qualified in my response. Designing creative features using thousands of engineers in one thing. But consistently producing a car of same quality is another thing. There is no disrespect to engineers there. It is the product development system that they have chosen or did short cut thereof. In this situation, my opinion is that Lexus brought out this car to the market with limited testing experience. Now they are fixing it with all these TSIBs.

Agreed. I also feel some common sense issues were overlooked such as placement of some of the optional rear seat controls under the center arm rest lid while the others are out in plain sight and the auto default to the Navigation screen each time you finish backing up instead of returning to the screen previously displayed.

Did yours rattle when you first got it or was it after x thousand miles?

Mine rattled from day 1. Outside temperature did not matter. The TSIB involves removal of the entire dash, so the procedure took about a day. The service tech at Lexus of Reno did an excellent job. Rattle was completely fixed and I could not find any visible evidence that work was ever done in that area.

IIRC there have been discussions on the board about how new generation harder plastics in vehicles has led to increased noise during certain conditions.

LOL, obviously you haven't read any of the dash rattle threads in the 3rd gen GS forum or the transmission shift flare threads in the ES350 forum? The dash rattle is a VERY common problem that affects most of the 3rd gen GS owners. My '07 GS350 was flawless but the rattles came back every winter like clockwork. Went in to the dealership 2x and even with TSIB in hand, they were unable to get rid of the rattles.

Engineers may not be the fault or entirely at fault, however I would like to see how one can defend Lexus’ development chain for not listing to customer feedback or attempting to make corrections at the assembly level. Please try..

Oh, and this is from an enigneer

I had a 99 GS400 that had a dashboard rattle, well it was more like a clicking sound and it drove me crazy,It also would happen when it got cold then hit small bumps,click,click........click,click,click,etc.I definatly dont miss that,The worst was early morning driving to work on a cold winter day, when I didnt want the radio on and the car was extra quiet all I heard was that dash rattle, anyway it was never fixed and I sold it that way .
