Go to MBWORLD.ORG in the AMG sedans. Up on top of each page for each models are the TSB. Print that out and give it to him.

I was close to getting one, since I still like the old design over the new one.

Seats are extremely comfortable. Power and braking is amazing. I love the exhaust.
Just make sure he get an extended warranty.

Now if you compared an S550 against an LS460L, then you are talking about something in the same ball game. Mercedes dramatically improved the S class starting in 07.
In all fairness, the cost of the LS430 air suspension is about the same cost as the MB.
It's not as prone to failing as mb.

Reliability is not that great, but I wouldn't call it terrible. Well, terrible compared to lexus.

Other prominent problems:
1. air suspension
2. door vacuum pumps
3. gauge cluster recall. I think it was ok in 06, can't remember
4. ...............

Except the Lexus system rarely fails, and when it does, it is normally in the factory warranty period. Also, Lexus wasn't dumb enough to make it standard on all LS models, like Mercedes (AKA Chrysler) was will ALL W220 S class cars.

Reliability on the first generation 00-02 was nothing short of horrible. They gradually increased and only went to 'acceptable' for the final production year, which was 2005 (keep in mind that the US still got them for 06, but they were actually made in 2005). The car was at the complete polar opposite end of the reliability spectrum from the #1 ranked LS400/430/460. The only thing that could possibly outdo the W220 S class on the top 5 most unreliable cars was the crappy Jaguar XJ.

And you forgot just about everything else on the vehicle. There are cheap electronics everywhere, failing sensors galore, poor Chrysler cut-rate build quality, and that wonderful world famous suspension system that just loves to leave you stranded! Did I mention that these cars love to eat batteries for lunch? They like wallets even better.

We considered an 08 S63 when shopping for my wife's LSL. Loved the S63 and if it was going to be my primary driver I may have gone with the Merc. End of the day the super deals on the LSL's made the price difference WAY too great for it to make sense. Was not aware of the issues with the S55 (other than batteries)- have drove several and known several folks who have owned but none owned one after the factory warranty was up.
