Although it's a 2009 ad., I didn't see anywhere that says the car is a 2009 model year LS ...... plus that's still too much to pay for a LS even with the 16% discount , they tax an awful lot more for import cars ......

LOL Because the cars in Asia are so overprice, that is why they can afford to give such a discount.....

Interesting, thx for sharing, and yes it is still very high by comparison, but hey maybe it's the best price there. Nice Mandarin Oriental backdrop!

If my memory serves me right, Singapore's import duty for foreign made cars is 100%. This reflect the government's attempt to choke the presence of automobiles on the island. They also pay prohibitively high license renewal rates every year, and very expensive permits to drive in the downtown core. Still, Singaporeans' priorities in life are 1. spend as much as you can on a fine home, 2. a fine car, and 3. whatever income is left on food. At least that's the way it has been explained to me by friends who live there, and ex-pats.

It/they are 2009 models. No 2008 available.

All cars in Singapore are imports!

Hi I am from Singapore and I have seen that article.
That article entitle Splurge and Save is not an advertisement, the newspaper is talking about how prices of things like cars, electronics, household items, furniture, food and clothes dropped drastically compared to 2008. The Lexus LS460 happened to be featured in a small part of the cars section. I do agree that 16% is very small because the other cars featured have greater discounts.
Featured cars
Ford S-Max - 29%
Hyundai Avante 1.6A (Elantra in the US) - 26%
Chevrolet Spark 1.0M - 29%
Toyota Prius - 13%
BMW 320i - 21%
BMW 520i - 16%
Renault Megane 1.6M - 19%
Suzuki Swift 1.3A - 18%
Mercedes E200 - 14%

Lexus Singapore doesn't keep cars that are more than 3 months old.
I wouldn't really agree that it is a 16% price drop because the listed price is currently $280,000 and $250,000 (what the newspaper said was a 16% discount) was after some haggling, well I got my car at $265,000 in March 08 when the listed price was $298,000.

A Singaporeans' priority are the 3 Cs, car, cash and condominium.
The whole point of Singapore having high taxes on cars is to make sure that there are little traffic congestion which is why I am hardly in the car for more than half an hour at any one time, besides Singapore has an excellent transport system, you don't need a car to survive in this country/city/island.
Burnaby, you are right all cars in Singapore are taxed 100% of their open market value when they are registered, but we will be able to get back like 50-75% of the tax when we scrap our cars before it reaches 10 years old and it also depends on when you scrap your car within that 10 years, which is why 80% of cars in Singapore are less than 4 years old. We have an annual road tax which Burnaby was referring to as the high license renewal rates which is charged by engine capacity so for the average 1.6 liter car like the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic ($750) it is not that expensive but for my LS460 is costs me like $4900. The permits to drive to the downtown core are like $1-$2 per entry which are not that expensive as bringing your car to work is still cheaper than New York or London.

And to miniz... did you think that Singapore's official language was Singlish?

Miniz, where did you get your information from??? Singapore is a multi racial country and the majority of the people are Chinese (70%) but that doesn't mean that Mandarin Chinese is the primary language. Only about half the population can speak Mandarin because some Chinese people don't speak Mandarin. English is the main language because everyone in the nation can speak it and ALL public schools and universities have lessons taught in English. You can survive in Singapore only knowing English unlike neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and even Hong Kong but if you only speak Mandarin Chinese you will suffer. Technically Malay is Singapore's national language because Singapore was part of Malaysia last time and our national anthem is in Malay but only a minority can actually speak Malay. I think that Americans have a perception that Singapore is a developing country because of its its nearby countries Malaysia and Indonesia but NO Singapore is better to live in than most American cities because of its good infrastructure and law and order.

I agree with George. I've traveled to Singapore many times, and Westerners can get around most easily. All signage, merchants, public buildings & places, restaurants, markets, and just about everywhere cater to English speakers. The streets, highways, public services and form of government are a model for all to aspire to in the region. That is why Singaporeans can travel abroad with ease and become easily assimilated in any country. Lee Kwan Yu made sure of that. And, Singapore is the most successful economy within the tropics and sub-tropical regions. If any westerners want to travel to a country where they can feel immediately at home and safe as well, then Singapore would be the preferred destination.

It's one of the few places on this planet that has an air-conditioned subway system (MRT).

Everyone I've ever met from Singapore have always been model citizens.
