Let's put things in perspective here. The HDD ML equipped LS hit the showrooms in late 2006, and was the only car that had HDD available at the time, to my knowledge, and it supports two functons, Navigation & Audio. Which other cars have a Audio based HDD? Sorry, but I've checked Ford, Infiniti, Acura and a few others, however I cannot find any other that feature a HDD as part of their audio system. They do have DVD playability, but no HDD storage. M-B has a 20GB HDD (half the capacity of the LS, because Lexus's music ripping feature) in their S-Class but it is devoted to the Navi; the same applies to BMW's 7-Series cars. So I'm confused here...

The non-ML LS which still has a competent system, doesn't have a HDD (HDD is also an integral component of the Navigation system, which eliminates the need to perform updates via DVDs), so ripping is a non-issue. Hate to be blunt here but like many other things in life, if you want them, you have to pay for them...

What are you going to do when your HD dies......https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...r-failure.html

the Non ML system is also HDD based for navigation, so the hardware is definately there, lexus just chose not do utilize it, just like with the new 2010 RX. it is also HDD nav based, but again they didnt set some space aside.

ever heard of Ford Sync? all the newer ford models with nav definately have the HDD music function. "A 10 gigabyte music jukebox function stores more than 150 hours of music"

Acura TL: technology package includes: "Premium 10-speaker Sound System with HDD music storage, in-dash CD"

Infiniti G: navigation package includes: "9.3GB Music Box hard drive with CompactFlash® slot"

my C350 benz has this function too. 6gb of music register

I looked at those cars, but could not find any reference to any HDD.

I'm sure you're right; all the power to you RXSF...

lol i really hope lexus changes this in the 2010 LS when they do the facelift. its just not right for a 60K+ car to not have this feature considering the LS doesnt have a USB inputs/ipod adapter/ bluetooth streaming either

to be very honest i am not a fan of the hdd storage method in the LS anyway for me to really care about the feature. if it has function to copy songs over as mp3 format, then yes, i think it's a plus. but the need to rip songs from audio cdda format to hdd, that just doesn't make sense.

when i had my ls460l, i simply burned mp3 cds and put it in the car. 6 of them and i could go a very long way already.

mp3s dont work? to my knowledge that is not the case on other brands because i burn my own music onto cd-rw's and load them into my other car.

i don't know about other brands, but my point is the music ripping mechanism on lexus is pretty silly, since it has to be in audio cd format. other cars i think you can just transfer mp3's over? that makes a lot more sense

that's why in my lexus i just play mp3 cds (or ipod through vaistech). the hdd is always bank

Romin,

I obviously missed it, but when did you get rid of your LS460L? Were you not satisfied with it, or was it just a case that you just like to frequently get new cars?

yup, sold the car as is last march, 6 months after getting it. it's a nice car, but i guess it's not for me. not enough road feel and always feel like driving a "boat". i figured i want a car that can give me more fun now we got a new m3 convertible.

i don't get new cars that frequently, usually at least 3 yrs. the ls460l was definitely the shortest ownership i have had
