Default Cabin Air Filters

Almost every time I go to my local Lexus dealership and sit in the service waiting area, I hear one of the service reps trying to sell someone a new filter to filter the cabin air from polen, dirt, etc. It's a $100-$150 repair. I always thought this was a bit of a scam... an easy money maker for the dealer. What do you guys think? Does the filter really need to be changed? How often.

Thanks.

are you talking about the AC filter? if so, you should change it regularly, maybe 30k, depending on the air quality around your area

They say in the owners manual every 10K. I pulled the one out of my LS 430 at 15K and it looked clean. I think every 10K is too often. When I had my QX4, they were really dirty at 30K.

per other posts on this forum, the cabin air filter warning light comes on after roughly 15-20,000 miles on average. I'm at 18,900 and mine isn't on yet.

When it does come on, I'll replace it myself.

Has anyone got a first hand procedural swap experience they can share, on doing this Cabin Air Filter replacement. My car (07 SWB) has 19K miles now and I am getting a strong stale odor on first AM start up, that sure appears to be a dirty filter. I declined the replacement on the last oil change out, as I reasoned it was another unnecessary procedure. I want to go ahead and do the R&R myself, and went to the dealer to get an exploded map of the flow box which holds the filter, behind the Glove Box. Was warned about doing it myself as there are some hinged flaps that retain the filter supposedly, and you can fumble quite a bit in your attempt. Would love any and all feedback. Thx, Jim

And the change can be done more easily than opening a can of soda pop...

Boy, the can of soda pop in my car was a biotch. I pulled and pulled on that shelf, and only one side would pop loose at a time. That wedged the other side to the point it wouldn't budge. Then I couldn't get the loose side back in. Dang!

I finally got annoyed and hot, and I pulled upwards and jerked on it hard and it almost catapulted me out of the car when it came loose. Dang again!

Then the filter holder was annoying to remove. It takes 3 hands (or more accurately, the fingertips of 3 hands) to press the tabs and pull it up and out.

No, I'm not a sissy ... I'm just better at big-fisted things like pulling engine heads and doing valve jobs. Those tweezer jobs make me crazy.

But in the end, I have a new cabin filter installed and I'm happy.

Glad you got through it. Some of that stuff is indeed breakable. I know exactly what you went through. You definitely need a third hand in there, which my wife conveniently provided as she took an avid interest in this procedure...

I squirted a few drops of Eucalyptus oil on the screen, which gave a nice scent to the interior of the car for a few days. Now my wife wants to experiment with other less earthy scents like patchouli, rose water & other feminine olfactory teasers... NOT...

at 80k they changed gear oil, air filters, AC filter, oil change, brake oil, etc . cost me about $600
