Exclamation Be careful: LS 460 Auto park brake: the car could roll.

Took my LS 460 for its first trip to a restaurant.

Already impressed with the "Auto" button on the parking brake, it worked very well during my test drive and even in the new car.

But in the restaurant parking lot, which had a bit of a slope: I stopped the car and switched off the engine, before I put the shift in the 'park' position.

and the car started to roll.... jumped back in and quickly took control of the situation.

no warning, no way of key not coming out of the ignition (it has the push button start and stop). I was driving a LS 430 before this one.

If it is not just me : please treat it as a warning!

The Auto Park feature is only activated when the car is placed into Park.

In your situation, if you want or need to leave it in Drive, then you MUST use the Manual Parking Brake.

If you choose to leave your car idling in Drive, you should use the Brake Hold feature instead, but the parking brake will be automatically be activated after five minutes, so you need to be vigilant when using this feature as the only warning shows up momentarily on the driver's INFO LCD monitor. This is also important if you use the Brake Hold switch in stop-and-go traffic, as one member found out a year ago, when after a long delay, he tried to overcome the parking brake by forcing/driving his way out of the dilemma and overheated his PB.

^ Yep - what he said.

By switching off the car before engaging Park, you bypassed the auto parking brake. When the ignition was turned off, you basically killed power to the (electric) brake mechanism.

The solution is to not switch the car off unless you're in Park!

Besides that, you shouldn't run with a pencil in your hand or you could put your eye out.

I'm not clear on this. You mean the car was in "PARK" and it still rolled, or you left it in "DRIVE" and just relied on the parking brake to hold the car?

Basically I stepped out the car after switching off the engine. The car was still in drive. but since there is no key: I got no reminder about this one.

so watch out with your kids and/or pets in the car : the car could roll without giving you any warning!

That can happen in all cars, not just Lexus equipped with an Automatic transmission and left in Drive, key or no key...

On the GS at least, when you press the power button without shifting to park, the radio and nav will remain on as if it were in ACC mode. And at least in my car, it chimes and displays in the center console: "Please shift to P range"

The same goes for the LS, and I would guess all Toyota/Lexus cars equipped with keyless start.

The whole idea as in your case, is to maintain power to the Accessories should the driver wish to turn the engine off while continuing to access these features. However in the LS anyway, it does not engage the Parking Brake, but this can be done manually by pressing the PB button. Since the OP is new to this car, he needs to familiarize himself with the LS's special features which are extensively detailed in the Owner's Manual.
