I got the fuel rail recall completed approx 6 months ago and immediately started getting a very light smell of raw gas when stopped at a stop light. The smell got progressively worse and only occurred after driving and then stopping somewhere with the engine still at idle. No gas smell under the hood, only in the cabin.
Well the dealer finally found the issue after my prompting and some iiternet searches. One of the fuel injector seals was leaking by, causing extra fuel into one cylinder with resultant rich mixture at idle (fuel was leaking into the cylinder not into the engine compartment).
Yes, the dealer tried to explain that there is a TSIB our there for rotten egg smell with some gas types, but he hung in there and found the problem. Kudos for the dealer, and the repair was covered under warranty. It appears, the recall kit is a difficult install and one of the seals was stretched(for this scenario to make sense, all 4 seals would have to leak-by). He ended up reinstalling a new rail kit with new seals for all of the injectors as well as a fuel supply hose.
