The dealership replaced my passenger side headlight bulb that would come on but go out periodically. It cost $500. They recommended the drivers side also but I declined.

500?? I hope you're talking about the whole assembly!

No. This was over two years ago. They informed me lots of labor because they had to remove the wheel, wheel molding and possible drop the bumper to replace the bulb. I believe the bulb itself was about $80. This was at a Toyota dealership near my house. I can't imagine what a Lexus dealership would have charged and this wasn't under warranty.

Wow. I replaced both of mine in about 20 minutes and neither removed the wheel, nor the bumper or fender liner. Crazy.

Would you attempt to do it yourself next time?

I would probably attempt to do so to save myself time and hundreds of dollars. I raised my hood, look at the assembly, fender lining and I don't see how its possible to do so in minutes?

My right side went out last night. I ordered a pair on eBay. The stores here want a fortune for them. I'll have to drive something else to the pool hall at night. I will report on the install hopefully by Sat.

Please let us know how the installation went and if you were able to do in a reasonable time frame without moving many parts to get the bulb out.. The dealership charged me a small fortune to replace my bulb.

There's several posts on this, but in short, you turn your steering wheel all the way over to give you room around the tires. Then unfasten just enough screws and retainers to move the fender liner and access the back side of the bulb.

I forgot to mention that the right side I'm having the problem with is on sometimes and off sometimes. 2 bulbs for $60. Says Philips. They aren't supposed to get here till Fri.

I changed my headlight, just one side for now by removing the fasteners and bending the forward portion of the wheel well liner out of the way. I removed the wheel since I have a lift. It took about 3/4 hour but I can do it in about 20 min next time. The bulbs I got are from factoryxenon on Ebay but they came with a note saying to buy from them direct at their web site at factoryxenon.com in the future for a better price. $60 shipped for 2 and they were the same exact Philips bulbs in my car. I think this job is worth one hours labor for one and 1.5 hrs for both sides at a shop and the price of the bulbs. For sure not $500 for one. YIKES!!! Next I ordered front brake pads from autozone. $50. They say no squeal and little dust. My current pads probably oem are coating my wheels black bad and Im not dealing with that.

It's mentioned before, but the Morimoto bulbs from Retrofitsource.com are amazing bulbs and brighter than most. You can choose from different temps. I got the 5000k and many members here at CL swear by them. Going on 2 years now with them and NO issues.

Just replaced 1 HID bulb on my LS '08. Thank you to everybody who provided info and pictures!

Given recommendations on this site I went with
D4S 5500K Morimoto HID bulb off Amazon D4S 5500K Morimoto HID bulb off Amazon
(hooray for 2 day delivery). Happy with the end result although it took me good half a day to finish everything, second side will be easier :-)

All in all, I took off a wheel and removed the fender liner. Here some pictures:

Looks good. I too installed 5500k bubs and find them to be a perfect white color. Anything higher and they look blue. I'm going on 2 years with these bulbs and they have performed flawlessly.

You only replaced one bulb and went to a different color temperature? Why not replace both?
