Change Oil At 5000 or 10,000 Miles?

I just had mine changed at Toyota yesterday and they used a synthetic for the first time- at least according to my records, they used "Guaranteed Lexus Oil" for the first 25K and we changed it every 5000 miles. Yesterday the bill was double (usually about $ 48 and it was $ 90) and the shop ticket said synthetic oil was used. I called the service rep and he said that the current recommended oil for the car is synthetic. I asked him then if this measn that we can go 10000k like the 2010 now recommends and that through him a curveball. He said he hadnt heard that, but would think I sould be able to go that long.

What's the Lexus service department say for the synthetic oil change intervals?

BMW & Mercedes, Yes they use synthetic oil but not the lower weight of 0-20w that Lexus use. Both use Mobile 1 0-40W. Could the lower weight be the cause for all the drivetrain "valve" problems that occur on this site? Yes, lower weight is great for cold start up and gas mileage since it will make hardly no friction, but I think the engine suffers once the motor is at temperature. Look at Nascar, they qualify with thin oil, small pads anything to cause "no friction" and once done they go to their race set up.............all fluids are changed.
If you really wan't to see if your oil is doing the job without tearing into the metals, have a Blackstone oil analysis done at oil change. I do this with all my cars and diesel truck. Can't go wrong here and they will tell you the health of your "inside guts" motor.

The 10k increments oil changes started with 2010 models per recommendation of Lexus. "Recommendation" not requirement big difference. Its preventative maintenance doing it sooner is not going to hurt anything. Completely up to the owner.

Yes those that choose to change oil more often than the manufacturer recommends in order to feel good should continue to do so as usual, even if it's a waste.
