OK, I see that for the 2010 model year, the LS has gone to 10,000 oil changes. I am wondering, OTHER than for warranty reasons (which I admit is a BIG reason), is there any reason for 2009 (or 8 or 7) owners to not also adopt 10,000 synthetic oil changes???
Put another way, is there any engineering difference between the 2010 engine and the 2007-9 engines that would make the the 07,08 & 09 engines more likely to have problems by going to 10,000 miles between changes.

No one really answered my original question: Is there anything really different between the '09 and '10 engines?

So when are the Lexus service departments going to quite giving us BS and just advise using the same synthetic oil as factory filled in the new RX350, GX460, etc.
The last time I went to the dealer the SA advised against it, with a lame excuse about the inspections every 5K miles, and this was a fairly experienced SA. I wasn't impressed.

Interesting information. My dealer uses a synthetic oil in my LS but I still change it every 5K which is about every 6-8 months for me. Interestingly at 5K the oil still looks pretty clean.

I just had mine changed at Toyota yesterday and they used a synthetic for the first time- at least according to my records, they used "Guaranteed Lexus Oil" for the first 25K and we changed it every 5000 miles. Yesterday the bill was double (usually about $ 48 and it was $ 90) and the shop ticket said synthetic oil was used. I called the service rep and he said that the current recommended oil for the car is synthetic. I asked him then if this measn that we can go 10000k like the 2010 now recommends and that through him a curveball. He said he hadnt heard that, but would think I sould be able to go that long.
The previous comment about the filter is an interesting one, but I assume the filter is only as good as the oil. If the oil isnt breaking down and getting nasty, then the filter doesnt work as hard. Whats everyones thought about the filter going 10K or have they redesigned the Lexus filter to be able to also go 10K.
And lastly, if they are switching the recommendation for the oil, will there be a software upgrade to change the cars setting to not trigger the 5000 mile change and go to a 10K change.
