Today, got a bad rock chip..
This is the 2nd time I've got the rock chip on my windshield, but I've never seen one this bad on my LS. IMO, it is way too bad just to get it repaired. I was wondering if any forum members from the Houston area know of a good place to get it done? And the costs to get the windshield replaced??
Thanks in advance..

Check your insurance policy and state laws. Some states require insurance to pay in full for windshield replacement. I'd be looking for genuine Toyota/Lexus glass if I were you, to help maintain the resale value of the car.

My windshield was hit by a golf ball-sized rock flung from an oncoming dump truck's wheel earlier this year. The noise that impact made sounded like a gunshot. Fortunately, in spite of the severe impact the rock struck the lower left corner on the driver's side and glanced off leaving only a few nicks that were not in the line of sight, so I didn't do anything about it. However, looking at yours it would appear irreparable as there are 2-3 spider cracks that will certainly spread. Insurance companies generally will only replace the glass if the crack resembles yours, or in the line of sight. The LS's windshield is very expensive - I've heard as high as $5000. I would only get this done at a Lexus dealer, using OEM parts.

I can chime in for a little info ... I had a bird fly into my LS 2 months ago, and it cracked the windshield which made it spread the next day. I called State Farm and my insurance covered the replacement FREE of charge with ZERO deductable ... HOWEVER, if I wanted OEM Lexus glass it would have cost me $2000 out pocket, but it was free for an OEM Aftermarket piece. I'm in Virginia by the way.

Binswanger Glass in Clear Lake (Hiway 3 - Webster) replaced the windshield in the old Acura Legend and did a chip repair on the LS460. They did a reasonable job.
A fairly large body shop that did previous work on the Acura "subcontracted" the windshield removal & replacement to an auto glass shop - they said the glass shop was just better at doing it. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Lexus body shop has a glass shop stop by and put in the Lexus OEM windshield.
Make sure your aftermarket windshield has the same high UV rejection (about 90%) and built-in rain shedding surface coating as the genuine Lexus OEM windshield. You might be able to use those premium features to get the insurance people to go genuine Lexus.
Also, if you have an early 2007 with the squeaky dashboard due to bad clips by the windshield (like mine ), having the Lexus body shop replace the windshield might also let them replace the bad dashboard clips without having to totally remove the dashboard.

Without rain sensor: $1,363.80
With rain sensor: $1,455.27
That's for the one with heated glass & without "pre-crash system". I don't know what the pre-crash is.
There are another two types with +/-$100.

Well.. That rock chip is gonna cost some serious MOOLA...
Lexus looked up my VIN # and the part for the windshield for replacement. Price of just the windshield alone is $1732.31 (Green tint/intermittent rain sensor). I'm sure labor/installation is some more change involved. Advisor quoted $2300.00
I've checked 2 other windshield places. The place I did my 99 GS300 cost me $500 bucks last time and they did a good job, but just called now in regards to my LS, its $1700 installed/tax included. The other place charges $1780.
I will continue shopping around.. but no doubt will be spending at least 1500 seems like. Another story to that, these estimates are for the OEM windshield. Sounds like they don't make an aftermarket windshield (which I wouldn't buy anyways).
Long story short.. DON'T CRACK YOUR LS460 WINDSHIELD!!!
