i was wondering about that -- apparently there's a TSB that details the install and operation of that kit. also, it apparently disables XM radio function.

i'll be picking up a vaistech soon, it seems like. burning cd's is getting tiresome haha

My service rep said that they discontinued the part because it was shorting out the Nav systems in some LS460s. I am assuming the Vaistech is trouble free. I am going to get one soon because the ipod in the cup holder BS is getting old.

I just installed my vaistech SL2i-up today but thought it would work with my Ipod Classic.. looks like it will with a 120g version only, but not the 80 or the current 160? Not sure I understand how that works. My 2nd gen Touch works fine, but not enough capacity, any have luck with a current gen 160 gig classic?

I have ver 4.5 firmware installed.

Thanks!

PS, may thanks to Henry for all of his advice getting to this point, he is a wealth of knowledge!

Apple has hopped around on their pin configurations over the past few years, anyone with a first gen Itouch and second gen Itouch would understand that painfully well, apparently the original 80gig Classic is a different pinout than the 120 which is verified to work, but its not sold any longer. I can tell you the 80g classic doesnt work with any initialization on the unit.

I would be curious to know if the current gen 160g Classic works with the IPOD cable that the VAIS ships with and/or is there another cable I could order so I could use my current 80g Classic? I don't know if its the VAIS box or the cable that actually makes this an issue.

I have a 2nd gen ITouch on it now, but 8-16 gigs isnt going to cut it, plus I dont want to waste the Wifi etc if its going to live in my center console, a classic 80,120 or 160 would be great.

I have added the current install manual it has a list of the IPODs that work with the SL2i-Up version, which has the nice interface and features for the 5th gen navigation systems.

I wanted to edit this comment, as the issue was with my IPOD not the SL2i-UP unit. it is fully compatible with ALL apple products outside of the IPAD with firmware 4.5

I just had Henry install the vml and ps override on my car yesterday. I hooked up my iPod nano (the generation right before the cureent one) and it works like a charm. Absolutely love it. The only thing that would make it cooler is if it showed album artwork, but no big deal. I am very satisfied with it and if I want to use a USB flash drive then I can use that instead of the iPod.

Update to this thread, I spoke to Ben at Vais tech support and the issue was with my IPOD, he recommended a soft boot which I did to no avai but I did a complete initialize of my IPOD and replaced the play lists and it shows up just fine now.

The SL2i-up is fully compatible with ALL Ipods, Iphones, excluding the IPAD which is good to know.

He mentioned that sometimes you will see the device switch into simple mode if there are IPOD issues, when that happens just soft boot the IPOD with the vehicle off and then let the Vais unit reconnect.

The interface on the SL2i-UP is very intuitive.

yup, i have seen this happen to me before. a lot of times soft booting the ipod fixes most of the problem. i wonder what the cause is

from what I can tell, the VAIS unit adds itself to the head unit as another device which is one handshake in the code. That profile is then saved and it is kept in its memory. the IPOD on the other hand is a software handshake every time you turn it on, there are various states that an IPOD can have, from on to sleep to off. I would be curious to know if this issue happens in all three scenarios or if its mainly when the unit is off or in sleep mode. If it is then a call from the VAIS that could be added to firmware could be made to address it.
