CPO extended warranty? Worth it?

I agree to disagree with williakz on the resale value of the unexpired portion of an extended warranty. It's a selling point, but few people will be willing to pay a premium. As a trade-in, dealer's will say, "So what?" and then bump up the price of the car a few hundred dollars to the next buyer, but not give you a dime more. I've made my decision; I'll forego the extended warranty and use the money to take a trip to the Holy Land this year...the cost is about the same. Thanks for all of your inputs.

It's a free country, and I hope you enjoy both your trip and smooth operation of your car. That said, I do take issue with your assertions above. Consider the following scenario with a private potential purchaser (I agree dealers have no interest): you offer the buyer a choice of paying, say, $20,000 (i.e. FMV for car) WITH NO warranty OR he can pay $20,000 + X for the car WITH factory warranty. You are asserting X is $0. I assert an X of $500 would be a no-brainer proposition for a private buyer to obtain factory warranty coverage. Obviously, whatever the value of X, it lessens the cost you paid for the warranty in the first place. Surely you see that X cannot be $0. The only question is whether X is high enough to offset your cost to an extent you consider reasonable. In your case you have decided it is not, others will see things differently. Good luck and bon voyage.

Does anyone else feel like whenever you bring your CPO in for a complaint such as weird grinding noise in my experience, that the service rep just calls u later n says everything is normal hence brushes off your concern?

I have found NO difference in service levels applied to CPO vehicles vs. leased or purchased ones at my local dealership. I think you got a clunker for a rep (hopefully not for a car). Escalate the problem to management. If no joy there, find another dealer. If still not addressed, escalate to Lexus corporate. Lexus takes its CPO program VERY seriously as it supports the trade-in market which in turn supports new car sales.

Next, when selling privately, the seller has the option of refund for the remaining warranty or transferring it to the new owner. Personally I would feel more comfortable buying a car that was still under extended warranty and I would consider paying extra for the unexpired portion of the warranty. It is less likely that there is an unresolved issue with the car such as a failing A/C compressor that was patched by adding freon

I did not know about the refund option from Lexus to the owner (original or subsequent to private sale). How is the unexpired portion of the extended warranty valued by Lexus? Is there a published schedule somewhere, is it pro rata against price paid, or some other mechanism? That a refund option exists for private sale buyers seems to make the purchase of an extended warranty even MORE compelling than my simple calculus. Thanks, JR.

Time begins the day following the expiration of original factory warranty. They use original in service date. You don't have to the original owner to purchase.
I traded in a 2008 Toyota Avalon on my LS 460. I had purchased a Toyota Platinum Extended Warranty on the Avalon and Toyota Financial refunded $1,008 of the original $1,800 I paid for it.
If you look at the Toyota and Lexus Extended warranties that are written the same way.

Filed the page for future reference. Thanks, JR.
To me, that means you can (and should) jack the sales price to a private buyer by the refundable amount of the extended warranty. He doesn't want the warranty, he can cash it in. If he wants it, he keeps it and passes it on. Either way, YOU only pay for the portion you use during your ownership. What a great deal!

2008 ls600hl
I leased my 2008 LS600HL in Oct'2011, after the first owner returned upon the end of his first lease. Since it was the first Gen LS hybrid, and i wanted to have an option to keep it after my current lease expires, so i bought the extended warranty of upto 8 years, 160,000KM from first in service date. The mileage was low for a 4 year old vehicle, only 46,000KM and no repairs. It was a CPO vehicle when i bought it.
I made the right choice paying for extended warranty from Lexus Canada. Paid CDN $3600 for 4 years coverage, till 2015 (8 years from first in-service date in 2007).
In 2011 when i took over the vehicle, the car had a defective cosmetic damage on a strip covering the roof-top, which cost $950 including parts and labour. The service consultant of the dealership fought to cover me in the extended warranty, though it was spell out as "wear & tear" which was not covered by the limited extended warranty. As gesture of good-will, Lexus Canada agreed to pay for it, so this was the first painless claim when i took over the vehicle.
Last year, after driving for a few months and checking with some friends, we agreed the wind noise was high for such a luxury vehicle. I made a complain to my dealership and they called in a "noise specialist" to investigate and told me it was part of recall item which the first owner did not bring in to fix. If i choose to do it, i would have to pay $900 to fix the issue. In the end, Lexus and my dealership paid $600 and i foot the remaining $300.
Last weekend when i brought the vehicle in for servicing, the ABS had to be replaced and would cost $3000 to fix it, had i not bought the extended warranty.
So, in total, i paid CDN$3600 for 4 years protection, and already made $4550 in claims and still has 2.5 years of protection to go....already making money out of it...

Wind Noise
yes, the fix by the dealer did improve the quietness. The irony is, when i first spoke to my service consultant regarding the wind noise, he runs through his computer showing me there was no recall to be fix on my car. That was when i first took over the car...then six months later, i'm quite sure it's not just me but all the people who sat in my car felt the same way that the car is noisy due to the wind noise. After the noise specialist inspected and tested the car, the dealership came back and said that there was indeed a recall for this, however, the first owner did not take it in for replacement of the rubber seal on top of window. Again, that's what they claim. So it's out of the original warranty and extended warranty doesn't cover TSIB outside first original warranty?! My service consultant took it to Lexus and his dealership, then both Lexus and the dealership agreed to pay for 2/3 of the $900 charge to fix the wind noise.
My car is now at 108,000KM and last week, i sent my car in for oil change and complained the brake noise (squeak when the brake is step) and engine noise was roaring higher when i first start the car. They found there was a ABS recall that needs fixing, if it's outside warranty, it'll cost me $3000!
During the repairs which took one day, they loan me the latest 2013 ES350, i love it! The engine felt more willing and enthusiastic, handling was better, impressive sound system, better insulation and interior design was more ergonomic..i don't miss my LS600H. Though LS600H still has an edge in terms of quietness and refinement, the LS600 does feel heavier and more stately (or boring to drive), better road presence.
