Winter tire minimum wheel size
Hi,
Last few winters, I have been driving my E39 M5 with 235/45/R17 Blizzak WS50 and LM-25's on 17" wheels. My current set has only one winter on it.
This summer I bought 2007 LS460L as my daily driver, since my 14 years old son is 6'1", and my wife refuses to sit in the back seat.
It's time to get ready for winter, and I have looked at Tirerack winter tire/wheel packages in 18" and 19" sizes.
Any chance that I might be able to use my existing 235/45/R17 Blizzak LM-25 winter tires and wheels on my LS?
Thank you,
Andrew

Unfortunately, NO
17s won't clear the brakes and calipers. Look how close the running gear is to the 18s now.
Tis a shame, as I had the same problem (low mileage Blizzaks from my GS430) but I just bought all new shoes (WS-60 with low speed rating. . the best of the line for snow.)
You should be able to sell them if they are not too worn. Now that it is high season, they approach $200 each, new.

Thank you very much for your replies...
I will follow the advice and get a new 18" wheel/winter tire package for my LS.
I am going to try to fit my existing 235/45R17 LM-25's onto my 2005 Toyota Sienna minivan. If it works, my wife should have a much better winter driving experience this winter.
Otherwise, I will have to sell them...
For my LS, I think that I will go ahead with Blizzak LM-60's 235/50R18.

Just a quick update...
We have tried to install my old M5 17" winter wheels and tires on my LS460L. The wheel did clear brake calipers without any issue, but wheel hub was too thick, and we could not see/use enough of studs to make sure that the wheel could be safely torqued.
It looks like a 17" winter wheel/tire package is possible on LS460..
I have decided to use 225/50/R18 LM-25's and my OEM rims, and I will get new 20" or 21" wheels/tires next spring.

When looking at brake calipers on my 2000 E39 M5, they are similar in size to 2007 LS460L. However, I was suprised that my old 17" winter wheel did fit. Too bad I could not use them...
Regarding LS460L in the snow, I think/hope that it will handle similar to my old M5 on LM-25 winter tires. The two cars have somewhat similar weight, but LS has longer wheelbase.
I have driven my M5 in the last 6-7 winters without any issues with good winter tires.
