What Daryll40 is doing is probably a bit more excessive than normal , but being "cheap and frugal" is what allowed me to purchase a $86K car in 2007.

Yep, Daryll was a good sport through this good humored ribbing, kudos to him!

I know what he's talking about with the cheap on some things and not others. My wife will drive miles to save 1 cent on a gallon of gas. Meanwhile she will spend like a drunken sailor on clothes, shoes and food. Actually that's not quite true, a drunken sailor would show more restraint!

Believe me, I get it...driving a $70,000 car and removing the spare to save gas. Silly. But I actually did it!

i don't see the enjoyment over having such a capable and luxurious car but fretting over gas usage and driving around with no spare.

LOLl having fun at daryll40's expense. Maybe some body mods like this.

One of our friends who has a 430 and Prius says having the Prius helped her eek out a bit more MPG by applying a similar driving technique. Luckily she is not a fast lane type and on our visits she's in the slower lanes.

It's more of a cheapskate experiment than anything else. I'll put the spare back sooner or later. Esp since my dash light shows the "TIRE" warning and "SEE YOUR DEALER" thingie.

This article about the (lack of) spare tires was in last weekend's paper...

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/7249460.html

and the closing paragraphs from that story...

"That's the trend, really, is away from spare tires," Adler said. "... We're certainly moving away from spare tires because of the weight, which affects fuel economy."

Thomas said it's not a coincidence that the trend is most prevalent among luxury brands. "A luxury buyer typically won't change their own tire anyway," he said. "They'll call a service to come and change them."

------------------
The article didn't say what the service guy does when there is no spare to put on. I think he is left with "goop" it or tow it.

I've personally used the spare tire 5 times so far on the LS460. Never changed on the road, always in my garage. Wife has a habit of curbing the right rear and tearing huge chucks out of the sidewall. Be a lot easier for me if I just kept the spare in the garage next to the jack.

With no spare, I find that the trunk floor really bows in when you bring home that gross of vodka bottles from MegaLots.

Or does that let you stack more in?

Thanks for being out on point, Daryll40

Invariably a flat comes in the worst part of town at the worst hour. I like having a full sized spare...if something happens, I can still roll as normal. The compact types, I'm more concerned about finding a decent tire shop to fix the regular and that can be a PITA if away from your local area.

A 50# tire in a 42XX# car...pretty insignificant. Combined with a 120# sub woofer enclosure, 5#'s+ per corner over stock for those big VIP wheels, the painted body kit.... (I've not been able to get a ball park idea what a painted body kit adds in terms of weight. ??)

Just get a picture of an LS printed on a T-shirt that says, I have one at home! That way you don't even have to drive it let alone gas it up. You'll also save the battery power in your key fob!

I like it. Or I can just drive my kids new Corolla and get one of those stickers that says "My other car is a big Lexus" (although the Moroney sticker says "mid size")
