smoked/ blacked out tail lights
I'd like to smoke may tail lights as I think it would look great on my black LS and I have 2 questions...
1. Does any one know if it's legal to smoke or blackout tail lights and how dark can you go? Is it similar to window tint? If less than 20% (here in MD) you get a ticket?
2. Those of you that have done it, can you provide directions/suggestions/instructions please. I'd like to do it my self, unless it's too involved/complicated.
Thank you

Back in the younger years I use VHT niteshade spray paint to tint plastic parts on my Acura Integra. I'd be too nervous to do anything to my Lexus now But anyways, apply one coat at a time and if you want darker, spray again....take the part off the car first

I never understood why people would black out their tail lights. To me it doesnt make the car look any better and only makes you more likely to be hit from behind from an older driver with a cataract. Remember even though we are younger there are many drivers on the road with cataracts. This reduces the amount of light reaching the back of the eye. When you add that loss of light to a blacked out tail light and day time sun exposure to reduce the contrast and BOOM you have a rear end collision. I say keep it simple, clean, and safe

our LED tails looks sweet, i would never cover them up..or maybe attract extra attention from the popo's....or have an insurance adjuster deny a claim if I get rear ended due to lack of taillight visibility..just sayin. But, as I always say..to each is own..do what makes you happy

Im spraying mine on monday(mix of candy black & clear). But u need to chk ur local traffic laws..(they post all the info online) in fl u have to be able to see red from 500 to 1000 ft away... But some officers use it as a reason to generate funds for they're local p.d. Apparently its more of a crime($89 "per" tinted lens to the dept in question) than selling drugs or murder (jail time) as there is no profit to they're declining gov't funds... So for job security we're are subject to persecution rather than prosecution... An no points to ur license.. So if u can handle the fines go for it... I am!!!!!

you could always tint them, this would be reversible if you dont like it. There is also plasti dip smoke which can peel off if you dont like it but it dries to a matte finish. If you want glossy you put plasti dip smoke (spray more coats to make it darker) once done there will be a matte finish. To turn this into gloss you use plasti dip glossifier (again the more coats the glossier). Plasti dip you are looking at a less then $20 cost (easy to do). If you do tints it would be from $120-$150, depending on the shop.

On some show cars I understand, I'd tint the tail lights. The only cars I've like with tinted/smoked/blacked out tail lights were on aggressive, heavily customized cars. But when I see cars on the street, I don't like the look.

anything is reversible.. it just takes more work with paint..i went on the lighter side this time.. but its wetsanded and buffed. to the touch it feels factory..(dont forget the third brake light its a dead give away) no telling its not oem unless theres another Ls next to me.. my friend color matched his to the body color of his truck... its awesome

I had mine professionally done they look great ,they look normal far as the amount of light that shines thru them when the lights are on or when the brakes are pressed , no problems from the law , I think they look better tinted especially on smokey granite mica you can even go real light if you have a shop do them , I wouldn't mess with the vht personally , I mean you can do it but I don't think it will look as good as getting it done professionally!!!
