i asked the same question about a year ago when I received my 460. Since then I appreciate the feature, I dont worry about passengers closing the door all the way, my kids getting in or out or having to slam it shut in the garage when I just need to get something out, as long as the door is close in the jam, the motors will gently take it and make sure its pulled in and secure. In other vehicles I would be driving for a while and think.. ok one of the doors is a jar and have to stop and shut it, I dont with the LS. Its a subtle feature but a good one in my opinion.

Though I appreciate the convenience the feature provides, I sometimes get worried that a child passenger might shut the door the wrong way and get hurt by the door closer. I just can't get rid of this horrifying idea.

1) have a kid sleeping in the back seat and you don't want to wake him up when you close the door
2) have a lot of bags in your hands and you want to close the door, but you can't create enough momentum to swing the door
yeah, both cases i did it in my gs350 and i wish i still had my ls460l

I remember a posting some months ago in which was posted a photo of someone's finger that got caught in the door by accident during the auto-close operation. The nail wasn't a pretty sight. Notwithstanding, I like the idea of the feature's benefits listed by rominl and the danger can't be that high - freak accident.

I do like the feature because it eliminates the need to slam the doors. I don't know how many times I say "please don't slam the doors on the Lex". It does surprise me though that a company that's so freaked out about potential liability issues that they lock out the nav system, etc, would allow this potential finger-mashing feature.

The feature is awesome. The doors on this car are heavy so sometimes they dont shut all the way. This also prevents you from slamming the door. I do get the incomplete closure every now and then and its nice not to have to reopen the door and shut it again. I didnt even think about the sleeping baby scenario

I always thought door closers would stop just before it closers and shut itsself therefor taking the inpact and ability to slam doors away . i thought maybe mine were not functioning properly .
