Default additional registration fees after car purchase?

hi all,
i picked up CPO'd LS a month and 2 weeks ago from a lexus dealer -- they just sent me a letter stating that i owe additional registration fees to the tune of about $230 or so. plugging in the purchase price numbers into CA DMV's registration fee calculator shows that the original amount i was charged at time of purchase to be correct. was there a registration percentage change recently? how would you guys resolve this? (i'm not entirely happy with how the dealer handled the transaction and i don't want to pay the fee if it's not legit)

thanks!

The registration fee is usually over estimated from my experience, I don't doubt that the state of calif is just jerking everyone around and looking for money any way they can. I have received a refund on cars I have purchased so I would guess its possible they didn't collect enough if the state came back and asked for it, but that is just a guess.

I would make sure that the amount that the dealer collected from you was correct, and if the dealer did actually pay them that stated amount that is in your paperwork. The dealer could have shorted the state and in turn the dealer could be trying to collect from you. Look into it. Dealers are all shady, but what would we do without them? Walk?

Make sure it is a reg fee and not a transfer of tags fee. If you do not pay that one, you will find yourself still the technical owner of the trade in. By transfer of tags, I mean that I kept the old tags and transferred them to my new vechicle. Sometimes things get confused. It is is easy to include the reg fee in the out the door price, but forget to include th transfer fee if you are keeping the old tags.
