Default Do engine oils have an expiry date?

Today I was at a garage to do the oil change and looked at the side label and found that the oil had been produced in Feb '10. The queue there was already long and I got a little concerned about the oil quality being affected by the time since production so I left without changing the oil.

Now is my concern reasonable? Should I find a more recently produced batch?

Good question. I don't know the answer but it may depend on whether the oil is synthetic or not. I would guess that oil should be good for a very very long time if not opened. You need a better informed opinion however.

From the Valvoline website.

Valvoline motor oil does not have a documented expiration date. Under optimal conditions, the product is stable for an extended period of time and can be used as long as the American Petroleum Institute (API) rating on the label continues to meet or exceed the requirements listed in your owner's manual. If the rating is still current, shake the container before use to blend any additives that may have settled.

I would guess that applies to other oil mfg's as well.
