Default Amazing 30MPG AWD LS460

Well, after two years of ownership, I finally took my 2009 LS460 AWD on a road trip. I went from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg via the PA Turnpike...about 200 miles each way. Going, I had the vent on (no need for A/C) and drove a steady 60 MPH. Cars and trucks were BLOWING by me, I confess. I reset the computer when I got on the PA Turnpike at Harmarville and read it when I exited at Harrisburg East. An amazing 29.8 MPG. ON 89 octane gas, too. I figured it was a mistake.

So coming back I did exactly the same thing, but had the A/C on 75 degrees. It was between 75 and 80 outside depending on where I was, so the compressor did have some light duty. This time the computer showed 29.9 MPG!!!!! Again, 89 octane gas.

I am truly amazed at the efficiency of this heavy, traditional luxury car (with the added fuel burden of All Wheel Drive).

I do inflate the tires to 40 LBS cold and drove very calmly. I had one stop at the Sideling Hill Plaza. Around town I only get about 16 MPG, but it IS Pittsburgh (up and down steep hills).

I guess I am just wondering out loud if I am missing something. The EPA sticker only rates the vehicle at 23MPG highway.

We just took a 380 mile trip in LS460L and we averaged 78 MPH (cruise control on 85). The mileage was an incredible 27.7 MPG. We were also running in 105+ temperatures with the AC running hard.

That says something for this engine and transmission.

Just came back from a 1700 mile trip from SC to IL and back through NC. Averaged 27.2 on the computer while travelling on the interstate. Only got 21.5 while driving locally. I only use premium.

Mine for comparison: 27.67 MPH and hw speed up to 80 mph but with a LS600hL
A short test drive with high speed was similar: 13 MPH at 160 mph, twice the speed half the mph and this is much more surprise for nearly 5300 lbs.

I have noticed about the same mileage in my LS as well but no 30 mpg. Then again I was averaging 82mph ( I was usually around 90 to 95 mph, and the occasional burst to 100 or 110 mph when we need to pass)

No, I don't think you're missing anything. The only thing I would say is the computer may well have been off by a few tenths of a gallon. I always check my gas mileage by actual gas put in the tank and actual miles traveled. There is always a slight discrepancy with what the computer reads.

Keep in mind you have to fill the tank to the same level each time, and even then you should measure gas mileage over several consecutive tank refills. But I agree, the overall gas mileage on this car is amazing.

It's not only the 8 speed, but the direct fuel injection(DFI) increases gas mileage by 10 to 15%. These engines have two injectors per cylinder, one in the intake port and one in the combustion chamber.

the last trip i took from Jacksonville to Tampa i was averaging 75MPH and averaging 32.4MPG ...A/C was on the whole time... but i have a SWB and its not AWD so im not sure if that makes a difference... when i 1st got this car and saw these numbers i was shocked but it doesn't surprise me anymore now that being said i usually average 22mpg in my local driving ( i drive like I8ABMR ^^^) also having the 22's on definitively makes a difference...

Default 32.1 mpg on a full load L460L (picture included)

No need to drive 60 mph. I drove mine around 80 mph and got 32.1 mpg on a L460L (upgrade rear seat, cooler) and have the 4-zone a/c ON. Carrying 3 adults with trunk packed to capacity.

Wow! Best mileage I ever had on mine was driving from Memphis to Atlanta..about 375 miles at 75mph most of the way..got right at 30mpg. That was on stock 18" wheels/tires. I just drove back from Orlando to Atlanta and the best I could get was 27mpg going about 80mph...still not bad at all and I am dropped on 20" wheels with 10" wide tire in rear...

I got 29.4 roliing on the hwy early this year going out of town, the 460 is a beast on the hwy and gets crazy MPG's for a car in it's class. I left my house from the east suburbs (ATL) headed up to DE this summer & did not have to get gas until i was in VA! The car can stretch a 22.2 gallon tank that is for sure.

So Tee, let me get this straight. You're bombing down the highway at 72 MPH and then you whip out your camera and stare through the view finder to take this pic. Please don't tell us you then texted it to this thread!
