I find the thumb drive support to be much less friendly than what you get when you connect an iPod. I purchased another iPod just for the LS, works great and has MUCH more storage than 16gb. Sure it costs much more than the flash drive but bang for buck is much higher in my opinion.

Default Update

During my 1,000 mile check-up, the shop said it tested the USB port with one of their USB thumb drives and the port does play music. I asked what make of thumb drive they used and they said it is "a Toyota thumb drive made by Denison." Denison is an OEM supplier to Toyota. They also remarked that I should by a "higher quality" thumb drive. Well, I have tried two thumb drives from national manufacturers: pqi and Toshiba.

Conclusion: use a thumb drive made by Denison.

Resolution: Go to Plan B (descibed in posts just above this one).

I hope this helps others who are trying to get the USB port in their Lexus vehicle to play music from a USB thumb drive.

Over and out.

i keep an ipod classic (160gb) attached to the usb port, but the lexus' interface in the nav system is so clunky when trying to find a playlist or album that using it is a pain - so i have it set for 1 playlist and hrdly ever change it. I usually stream my music from my iphone. At least that way, i can easily find playlists or albums.

Interesting . . .

BTW, thanks for your help.

I do agree with you about the clunky interface.

When you say you stream, how do you do that? Via bluetooth? I have an iPod Touch (4th gen) that I could use for this.

I loaded up 418 50's songs on a 4 gig drive and had problems. I finally discovered that you can only have a max of 255 files per folder on a USB. Each additional folder will accept another 255, etc. I created more folders, but still having problems.

I have an '08 LS and I went to my Lexus Owners website and thought this might be a similar situation,
but couldn't find anything on what 'formatting' they wanted.

Thanks

Am I missing something? I didn't think '08 cars had USB. I was under the impression that came out in 2010? <-- Which BTW, is absolutely ridiculous for Lexus to be so far behind the curve on that! 2007 it should have been standard. You can get park assist, but no USB port for iPod? Hmmmmm. Retarded.

I am not sure about when the USB port arrived since I am new to Lexus this year. However, I was surprised when the dealer told me I needed a "high quality" thumb drive. USB technology has been out for years now. Any spec-compliant thumb drive that runs on a computer should be compatible. I mean, if you can plug a thumb drive into a $600 computer it should work when you plug it into an $80,000 car!
