Default Afford to buy vs. afford to own

Just curious to know from owners who have had their cars for a number of years, especially those out of warranty. Some cars are expensive to buy but what can be a surprise is the cost to own, maintain and fix. Especially if you are someone who keeps their cars for 10 years or more. If and when I buy an LS I will probably be looking for a 2008 or 2009 base model with 30 to 40K miles. I will purchase along with an extended warranty but was wondering what I should budget per year for general maintenance and routine repairs. I have a Mercedes (currently for sale), that is an older model and out of warranty. Every time it’s in the shop which is two or three times per year the cost runs $800 to $1,800. Never want to be in this predicament again so I thought I’d ask here.

Thanks

Had my 07 LS for almost 2 years now and I have extended warranty..I have yet to use it. Oil changes at dealer run about $65 ..I would say maintenance is certainly better than BMW or Benz for sure..go for it..just get service history report to see how well car was maintained..you can do that under the my owner link on Lexus.com

Anything that you mess up WILL BE COSTLY. My LS has had no issues from wear and tear and use, but a crash and a wiring mishap totaled 10k. Luckily I have the extended warranty but the crash cost me 8k. No body damage at all all suspension.

Coming from a benz or bmw you will be in for a pleasant surprise.
I was in the same situation before (coming from multiple 7-series bmws) It got to a point where my mechanic told me basically buy a lexus cause he doesnt want to screw his friends.

2007 LS460 purchased brand new here, no extended warranty, no issues, lowest cost of ownership car I have ever had, I'm highly pleased, will not buy another brand as a main daily driver.

A mechanic friend of mine gave me this advise when I was looking at the following:
BMW 528i Xdrive
Audi A6
Lexus GS350

He said the Beemer has it's fair share of problems, the Audi, if he won one in a contest would turn around and sell it, the best bet is the Lexus.

I bought the GS and haven't regretted my decision.

2007, bought new.. 60k miles.. no problem so far.. but seems like most modern cars are all "great" until 80k to 120k.. so we shall see...

in the world of automobiles, toyotas are known to be bullet proof for my family

at least for the GS main issues just are suspension (LBJ, etc.)

our family has owned nothing but toyota's for 20 years and no big issues so far. we just change the oil and drive!
