My 600hl has the led array on the steering column.
What exactly do they do.. I was told they were some kind of sleep monitoring or attention monitoring devices which are activated in a pre collision situation..
Anyone know what their exact function is?
Thanks.

Yes, it monitors what you are doing. Sex (while in motion) and eating is forbidden in a LS600 (monitoring the driver only). Try it out! I mean close your eyes and you will see -pardon feel not see- what she is doing! I did a test with really dark glasses and said: OMG! Why on earth...(to be continued).

Found the answer: Driver Monitor System that helps warn drivers if it senses an obstacle ahead of the car and that the driver's head is not facing forward.
So, please don't assume that you can rely on the car to monitor ahead, while you do "naughty things"
