Question Deals on remaining 2012s?

Good afternoon,

First post here so be gentle! Am currently an S Class driver, had it for about three years now and looking to swap it out for something else. I'm not entirely sure I want another S Class so am looking at all the options and yesterday found out about the all new 2013 LS. Being one to always keen to get a good deal on my cars I figured that'd mean dealers wanting to get rid of their 2012 LS inventory. I'm in central VA and the nearest dealers all seem to have a handful of 2012s obviously all listed at MSRP!

When the current S Class came out in '07 dealers were taking baths on old models, I know of a guy on the forum I use for Benzs getting a brand new S65 AMG (around $190k list) for $115k! Mercedes are a bit different from Lexus in that owners are notoriously fickle when it comes to new vehicles and they are known to taken bigger depreciation hits but I wasn't sure if Lexus fit the same bill. If I offered $50k for a $71k model am I going to get laughed out of the showroom?! To me it doesn't seem that unreasonable, who would buy last year's model at anything close to MSRP of a shiny new one? How desperate are the dealers in general to flog their outgoing inventory?

I actually haven't driven a Lexus since I last switched cars, that was an LS430 and this plan is something I only hatched yesterday so I haven't even had a chance to get over to a dealership to look at one of these LSs and won't until this weekend. I wasn't all that impressed with the LS430's interior compared to the S Class I got (a top of the line 600 with all leather, burr walnut and alcantara interior) and I'll certainly miss the bi-turbo V12 but oh well, times move on. I figured that with new 2012s dwindling in numbers I'd better move fast if I'm going to get one!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Fraser

Hang with the Mercs until 2015/16 when all-new LS comes out. Then the 2012s will be even cheaper!

Thanks for your input! Pardon my ignorance but I thought the 2013 LS was all new? Certainly a lot more than the mild facelift I'm used to with the Germans!

I'm guessing if it's a minor change then I can't expect anything too stellar off the MSRP then. That rather shoots down my plan!

The 2013 LS is all new, it is not a refresh.

Hi Fraser83, welcome! (We won't tell the MB forum you're poking around in here).

I guess it is up for debate as to whether the 2013's are all new or a refresh, but to me they appear to be a refresh. Read this thread for some good info - https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...ervations.html

" If I offered $50k for a $71k model am I going to get laughed out of the showroom?! "

I've been laughed out of better showrooms than Lexus and MB. I love your bargaining technique, it's a lot like mine. As opposed to my wife who likes to pay full pop plus 10% for their trouble for selling something to her. I sincerely doubt that offer will be accepted, but at least you have set the tone of negotiations. And of course you sound like you can easily walk out of the showroom and put the ball back in their court.

Let us know what happens this weekend.

You will probably get laughed out but it's worth a try. Most Lexus dealers know they won't have to many issues selling 2012 LSs.

Thanks for the input, information and welcome!

Seems like the 2013 changes aren't nearly as drastic as the impression I got looking at the website so a $50k offer is probably rather silly. I've decided this time around I don't want to spend much more than $50k so a shiny new LS of any flavour is probably out of consideration.

I had been considering a top of the range '13 ES when I noticed the '13 LS which hatched this plan. Will go and have a look at the LS for the hell of it and the ES and see how I feel.

Thanks again!

Default 2012 LS Price

As of end of last year, people were getting $11K-15K off MSRP. Good luck!

Good luck on your endeavors. Yes the 2013 is a new/refresh model, the remaining 2012 LS should be gotten at a good deal. December to remember promotion had great lease/purchase deals. Lexus older models do not depreciate that much, so I don't think your offer of 50k will fly far.

Oh, really? Hope you didn't buy one on that basis. You can't SEE the 2007-2012 LS hiding in the 2013? Really? Mebbe you should go with the other guy over to Mercville.

Lexus refers to it as a "major minor." That is, it is a substantial ("major") COSMETIC ("minor") refresh rather than a ground-up redesign which is expected in MY 2015/16. Lexus says half the parts (approx. 3,000/3,600?) were changed to some (major, minor, your guess as good as mine) extent. Engine has same performance specs as prior. Hope this helps. BTW, all this info and much, much more is widely available and has been for months on car sites and in car mags. If you're thinking of blowing $50k plus, you may wish to check them out instead of swallowing BS from chuckers like me.

I doubt the 2012's will be moving quickly at anything close to MSRP with the 2013's sitting right next to them that are so much better in almost every way possible.

Regardless of the Lexus hype and the hype of some here who drink the KoolAid, the 2013 is the same 'ol car, warmed over a bit. I have a 2009 and my father just bot a 2013. I've compared them closely and the 3000 new parts had to include counting the hash marks on the speedometer. Read my full review here:
